The pros were the cost, the location, the view. It was great to be in Hawaii.
We wanted to keep costs low. We had a very reasonable package that included the Queen. It is not "ritzy" however, it is comfortable and I felt safe. We got a can of lysol to freshen it up a bit, but I do that at all hotels. The location was right across the street from the beach and all beach/downtown attractions were in easy walking distance (and I'm not the athletic type). Also, most of the tours will pick you up at this hotel. The view was great as we ate delicious pancakes with all of the fixings at the hotel restaurant and enjoyed the breath taking view of Diamond head.
It is no where near being an exclusive hotel, however, if you are looking for safe, comfortable, accessible, and super price, IT CAN'T BE BEAT!

First time in Waikiki!

The reviews sum up this hotel - needs refurbishment as it is a bit tatty and tired!! But generally nice hotel with nice and helpful staff!
But it is 2 minutes away from Waikiki Beach so the location is great! Although there are shops and restaurants near by, you can end up walking a while trying to find the one you want - except the ABC store which is everywhere!
There is a bus stop right outside the hotel so you can get the bus easily to a lot of places. We tried to get the bus to Hanuama Bay at 8am but it was packed by the time it got to our stop so instead we got a shuttle cab.

We have just returned to the UK from a two week stay at the Queen Kapiolani, and it was pretty much what we expected after reading a few reviews.
It is in need of refurbishment , it really does look tired and out dated.
The room we were given on the Penthouse floor was the smallest double room I have ever seen, so we payed extra to upgrade. We ended up in room 510 on the fifth floor, a spacious double aspect room with a nice balcony overlooking Diamond Head and the sea on the other side. The view was wonderful.
Bathroom was not bad, towels changed daily and kept clean by housekeeping.
The TV was very old and they really should update them.
Now the bed was terrible, the floor was more comfortable, if you like HARD beds you will be OK, we don't.....never mind.
the BIG BIG problem was the noise, we might well have been on the street, there are two nightclubs close by and it gets very noisy when they leave (lots of shouting and argueing). There is a car park directly in front of the hotel which attracts youngsters cruising with large music systems booming.
The traffic noise is really loud, worse were the waste disposal trucks every night (or early morning). The rooms need double glazing, it is all very nice having a lot of natural light and great views but it is not practical. We could only sleep wearing ear plugs we kept from the Airline (thank you Virgin).
I nearly forgot the Air conditioning unit....truly ancient and too noisy to use.
Let us be positive for a minute, The reception staff were very helpful and polite, (special thanks to the ever smiling and helpful Shane).
Trying to get breakfast at the hotel was almost impossible!
The first time we tried the witress only gave us half our order, we had to keep reminding her of this and that she kept forgetting, it was a dead loss so we jumped in a cab and ate at the Wailana coffee house (great food), but we tried breakfast at the hotel on our last day as it was convenient, unfortunatly the watresses were more interested in chatting amongst themselves, we were the only people in the place, what's more they seemed surprised when we walked out after being ignored for five minutes or more.
There are much much better places to eat.
Would we stay there again? No has to be the answer.
I really don't know why someone does not buy the hotel and make it the 'Hilton' with the fantastic Diamond Head view.
But you get what you pay for. Happy holidays.

Stayed two nights here in June 2008. Was told that I had been "upgraded" when I checked in only to find that my room was old, dated and very worn (can't imagine what I'd have gotten had I not been "upgraded"). Furnishings were old and in disrepair; the carpeting in poor shape. Bathroom was even worse - the tub was very old and dirty; the wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling off. Both the room and all of the common areas of the hotel are in a desparate need of updating. Staff were, at best, aloof. The only bright spot was the restaurant. While the surroudings of the restaurant were also in need of an update, the staff were very friendly and the food (at least for breakfast anyway) was very good and very, very resonable. Next time I'm in Honolulu, I'll spend a few extra dollars for a nicer, newer room somewhere else.

The hotel is old but I thought it was clean and tidy. We had a standard room which was very small (hard to get bags through the door - furniture prevented opening door fully).
It is rather noisy but we slept with the air-con on so that blocked out most noise.
It has the basics and is good value for money - very convienient & cheap. But you would only want to sleep here - not the sort of hotel you would sit back and relax in. Overall - good value for Waikiki but it's not a resort.
