Not much to chose from in the area, so we booked on a drive-by look. They gave us the AAA rate (despite not being members), which was nice.
This could be a great place to stay. Sadly, there are little things that get in the way. Our room was clean, although a dirty towel and a dirty washcloth were in the bathroom, obviously missed by the cleaning staff. Otherwise, not bad. The common areas were less clean, with the usual smoker's debris everywhere. Some wear and tear was obvious, like the missing handle on one of the dresser drawers.
The property is rather spread out. The games room is quite some distance from the highway side building (where we stayed), and we did not even know there was a pool until the next day. The private dock and beach is quite nice. Our room did have a view of the river, although mostly as it was above the other buildings between us and the river.
The breakfast was much better than the "continental" ones seen elsewhere, but not up to a full breakfast one would find in a B&B. E.g., scrambled eggs, and waffles one could toast, but packaged yogurt, juices, etc. buffet style. The restaurant is really quite nice, but only open for breakfast for the guests. PIty, as there are few restaurants in the area.
A little more care could make this an above average facility. It has great potential; decent location, good amenities, visual appeal, but is missing those little touches that could make it so much better. I would stay there again, but only if I could not find anything better in the area.

We have family in the area and have stayed at Stone Fence every year during the summer for at least 10 years. While "resort" is a bit of a stretch they do have a musty game room, basketball, tennis, volleyball, shuffleboard and a pool. Bring your own equipment if interested in playing, last year all the resort provided equipment was beaten up pretty badly. The rooms vary considerably. We have 2 adults 2 kids staying and prefer the rooms with 2 queens or townhomes which have 2 beds in the loft and a queen downstairs. We've found the rooms in the manor or main building to be in better condition. What always sets this place apart from any other place we have stayed is there is always something in the room that doesn't work. This includes lighting, plumbing, microwave, ac, tv..... I guess we've just gotten used to it as there aren't many alternatives in the area. We make the call for repair as soon as we arrive and they try their best to repair. I think the bottom line is there is just not enough profit in the operation to keep this place up. It's kind of a shame because the property is beautiful, right on the river with docks, gazebos and very spacious grounds. Free breakfast buffet is basic and OK, cereal, breads, yogurt, meat, juice, coffee, muffins etc.

Had I read most of the reviews on this website I would have not booked a room at the inn. However, I was driving through town at four in the morning and was exhausted.
Upon checking in the room was neat and clean. It was by no means a resort. I got a good nights sleep and woke up the next morning feeling better, but a bit tired since I got to bed so late.
The only problem I had with my stay was the shower head didn't exert enough pressure. Also the shower head was to low. I have found this a common problem in many motels. I am 5'10, average hight by most standards, yet the shower heads stand at about 5'7.
Check out was simple, the price was somewhat more than what I wanted to pay, but it was worth it.
There aren't many other motels and/or hotels in the area along route 37, so if you really need a place to sleep this might be the place.
I noticed a tennis court and basketball court in the back in the morning. However, I wouldn't say this is a resort. It is basically a motel with a basketball and tennis court.
I never found fleas and didn't find paint splotches on my towels.

We stayed in the Shoreside "Motel" which was called " The elegant Shoreside Hotel" on the Stonefence website. The hallway to our room had cigarette butts on the floor and an ashtray full of cigarettes on the window ledge right next to the door of a room labeled "Smoke Free." I suppose since you cannot smoke in the room they thought it was okay to smoke in the hallway. There was a bag of potato chips that was open and spilled all over the middle of the hallway which we proceeded to have to step over every time we walked to our room. It was not cleaned up until the following afternoon. Our room was filthy. There were four bath towels in the bathroom. They were a variety of washed out colors and different sizes. The one we looked at just for laughs(luckily we had a towel from home that we used) was red with a big paint stain on it. Yes, paint stain. it was once used as a drop cloth! It was a digusting place which could have been wonderful if they had only kept it clean. What a shame.

I am reading some of the reviews for this hotel, and wanted to add my thoughts.
I had a one night stay at the Stone Fence in April of this year. I was en route to New York City from Toronto for the Easter Long Weekend, and wanted to get stateside Friday night, to avoid any potentially lenghty daleys at Customs the next morning. I Googled for hotels in Ogdensburg, New York, and this hotel was listed so I gave them a call. I explained that I would be arriving late, and the staff member said she would make arrangements to leave the key where I could find it as their office would be closed at my hour of arrival.
We crossed into New York State at 2:00 A.M., and were able to find the hotel easily enough, by staying on the main road upon crossing the bridge. And true to its name, there was a "stone fence" outside.
As promised, I was able to locate two room keys left for me and my travelling companion, and opened the door to find a warm, SPACIOUS, and tidy room. There were two beds, spaced considerably away form each other - one near the back of the room facing towards the St. Lawrence, and one facing the road. There was even a T.V. for each bed. The room was quiet, and comfortable, and I awoke the following morning well rested, as did my travelling companion. The view through the sliding glass door was of the St. Lawrence, and we were wishing we had more time to stay and enjoy the lovely view.
Upon check-out, as per arrangement, I had no problem paying cash, as the reservation was held on my credit card, and the rate was extremely reasonable for the accommodations provided. Travelling a great deal for business, I am used to not getting what I pay for.
My friend and I both enjoyed our experience at this hotel, and would not hesitate to use it in the future.
