Since we were arriving into Milan's central station quite late at night, we needed a cheap hotel that was easy to get too. Hotel Mazzini was satisfactory on both counts. We stayed in Room 10 on the first floor - high ceiling, good shower (if a little mouldy) - a clean but basic double room.
The breakfast wasn't outstanding - just cereal, coffee and a few danish pastries / croissants which weren't that fresh. In terms of nightlife, The Art Factory isn't too far away and it's a nice place to relax with some cocktails or a few glasses of wine.
All in all, I'd recommend this hotel to somebody on a budget, who isn't too fussy about extra luxuries and who is only staying for a night or two.

Stayed at Hotel Mazzini in July 2007 for three nights, and I definitely liked the place. It’s nice, clean and friendly, really close to the Central Station, thus, being a good option for those planning to go somewhere else by train. You may want to use a cab if you have plenty of luggage, though, but it’s not a problem taking into account that the receptionists at this hotel are incredibly helpful and friendly. They will call a cab for you, help you with your bags and give you any directions&information you may need – from how to get to the place you need to movie advice and weather forecast for the rest of your vacation.
I particulary liked Abigail – nice and tactful, and Raffaele, who, in my opinion, is extremely skilled and professional in tourist business. And they serve you cappuccino which is beyond any praise, probably the best I’ve had at hotels in Italy.
Rooms are clean (the cleaning lady really does her job!), bathroom is good and totally new, so you won’t encounter any problems with water pressure or anything else. Bathroom utilities set (mean soap, shampoo etc.) demonstrates sincere care for customers and even includes a shower cap, a glass and slippers.
They say it can be a bit noisy at night (some rooms look right into Via Vitruvio), but it wasn’t a problem for me. However, if you’re noise-sensitive, you may want to ask for a room on the backside of the building, so that you can enjoy a view of a small cosy garden.
Among other things I want to mention are a small cosy bar (in case you’d like to have a drink) and an elevator (in case you have heavy bags).

After traveling in Italy, staying in 7 different hotels and b&bs in the 60-70 euro price range, we can definitely say that this was by far the worst place we stayed. We had the misfortune of having this place as our hotel for two nights in August. The room we were given had a funny odour, especially in the washroom. The furnishings were outdated and worn out. The headboard and tables in the room were greasy, the walls were filthy, and the chairs were damaged. In the washroom the entire ceiling in the shower area was covered in mould. The only thing that appeared to be clean in the room were the sheets (not the cover). We were not surprised that the room didn't have a/c as many places in Italy do not. However, there was no fan either. Therefore at night we either had to open the windows and get eaten alive by mosquitos or sweat with no fan. Needless to say we didn't sleep very well either night. There was also quite a lot of noise at night from people outside and other people staying in the hotel (the walls were thin). The breakfast on the first day was fine but on the second day the buns were stale and there were not enough for everyone who was staying at the hotel. The area around the hotel is not that nice. There were hookers on the street outside in the evenings. The positves about this hotel are that it is close to the train station and to the main street with shopping. It is however far from many of the other sites tourists may want to visit in Milan. There is no way we would ever stay in this hotel again.

Mazzini was great value for the price. The room was spacious, clean and had air conditioning. The bathroom was also a good size and the provided toiletries were a nice addition. The guy at reception was friendly and helpful and breakfast was pretty good. It does look a bit dodgy outside, but inside is bright and clean.

We've just come back from Milan. Hotel basic but room ok. Staff friendly and helpful, particularly Susanna. Noisy at night. Felt ok walking around at night. Had a good time.
