The Green Lake is probably the best hotel in Kunming, but it is becoming a little date and in need of a refurbishment, particularly its guest rooms. This is like 5 stars in the early 1990s. There is nothing wrong with the rooms per se, it just needs some freshening up, particularly in the bathrooms.
The hotel is well located and has numerous cafes, restaurant and bars nearby around the Green Lake itself which is a nice walking and public area. The hotel boasts a large lobby and overall quite good service. The concierge is extremely helpful and Vike one of the guys there helped us significantly when we said we wanted to go to see any local art galleries.
Breakfast was decent and set in a nice large and airy room with high ceilings.

This place was wonderfully luxurious and a terrific location right on Green Lake Park. It was wonderful to walk right out our door to take a stroll around the lake. Only drawback was a lack of great restaurants in walking distance. There were restaurants, but not very good ones. Had to get a cab to get to good dinners. Staff was terrific and helped us book travel to our next destination and a trip to the nearby Stone Forest.

I was told on their site that this hotel is one of the best business hotels in China. That speaks volumes, as I've visited many business hotels in other Chinese cities so I'd come to expect much.
But sadly, the Green Lake disappointed me. First, as a previous contributor said, the service was poor. Although I can forgive a Chinese-run 3 or 4-star hotel from having such service standards, I cannot do so for a 5-star outfit which claims to be one of the best business hotels in China.
The bellboys don't help you with your luggage when they see you alighting from the taxi. They never came despite asking them to do so when I checked out. The check out counter staff asked you to go have breakfast 1st so that they can do the admin work for check-out, then when you return they asked who you are... small things and somewhat petty, but should not have happened in such a hotel...
Location-wise, this hotel is near a beautiful lake but my room did not have a good view. I also notice that the deluxe rooms are actually different categories -- one of them which my trader stayed in was old, drab, stinky and of inferior quality. Not that the one I stayed in was a palace, but it seemed renovated and more nicely touched up... yet, my room bordered on a dated look, and the wooden bathroom doors were rotting at the ends -- evidence of age and a lack of care...
So what's good of this hotel? Well, the rates I paid (CNY620 net) was a bargain by the standards of Chinese business-class hotels. That's about it actually... my colleague had stayed at the Kai Wah Plaza instead and she found it modern and clean... I wonder if I made a wrong choice this time round...

We stayed here for the adoption trip for our son for the entire week. The suite was nice with two full rooms of space with nice amenities including the great high speed internet access. The staff was friendly and many were trying to learn more English. The breakfast buffet had a lot of variety and we especially loved the noodles. Great location on Green Lake. We thought this was one of the nicest hotels we had stayed at in China on three adoption trips. We are hoping to stay there again in the Fall of 2007 for our next adoption trip.

This was the worse hotel I have EVER stayed at. I have stayed at 3*s which were better than this. The level of service was terrible. None of the bellhops or staff offered to help me with my bags (I was carrying 3 bags cuz my wife was not feeling well). Instead, they chose to stand around and chat amongst themselves.
Even when one of the host was asked by the front desk personnel to show us to our room (no one volunteered), she did not offer to help even with a single bag.
As for the room, it was very dated and not in the best state of repair. The food at the cafe was terrible, as was the service.
