This is a rather basic hotel for the price.
The room was clean and the mostly young staff were pleasant and helpful.
The breakfast was fine.
However, we made the mistake of booking for dinner one evening.
I am sad to say that it was the worst meal that I have had for years.
It started with a cheap white roll with a sizeable patch of purple mould on it and ended with execrable coffee.
I had the roast of the day, a piece of chicken whose pale flaccid skin made me suspect that it had been "roasted" in a microwave. This was served with lukewarm gravy.
My companion had a vegetable risotto that bore no resemblance to the Italian dish of that name.
The rice seemed to have been boiled in water and a few vegetables added.

Stayed earlier this week. The staf are very friendly. The room was spotlessly clean, as were the bathroom and towels. The breakfast next morning was first class.

The Portland Hotel Buxton Derbyshire.
This was our first stay in Buxton and we are glad we stayed at the Portland. The hotel was very welcoming and the staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is across the road from the Pavilion Gardens and the Opera House is just a short walk down the road, The town centre is about ten minuets walk away.
The room was clean and well aired and warm for a cold day.
The beds were comfortable and, most important, clean.
We have stayed in some 5 star hotels that didn't have this feel about them.
We will look forward to a return trip soon.

We were part of a group that booked the whole hotel for a long weekend. Some guests were not too happy with their smallish rooms but those with the larger rooms seemed to be very happy. Breakfast was excellent and there is a nice conservatory where the meals were usually served. Two downstairs rooms, one with a good TV. Dinner was quite good most days and we felt that we got hood value for money. Management and staff, mainly English, were friendly and efficient. Bar prices very acceptable. Very good value for money but try to get one of the better rooms.
