I suspect the hotel inspectors only see the deluxe rooms to give it good reviews. Our standard room no. 15, Muscadet, was minute, with a shower hardly big enough to turn round in, portable TV and a view over the carpark. At ?110 per night (discount rate supposedly) we thought it was very overpriced. The "leisure centre" is in the basement and the pool is very small and heavily chlorinated. The aroma therapy booth was broken when we stayed and the treadmill sounded as if it was about to break too.
We did not eat dinner in the restaurant but breakfast was ok tho the tables are small and close together.
Overall I thought this hotel is pretentious and expensive for what it is which is basically an upmarket bed and breakfast and we won't be going back. It was noticeable that we appeared to be the only guests under 70.

i booked the champagne room at rye lodge on the 10th april/08 for a surprise stay with my boyfriend . after booking by phone, which i must stay the stuff sounded nice and very helpfull and helped me organize everything i wanted .and then saw peoples reviews on here and thought dam have i made a mistake. but i took a drive up to the hotel , and it looked great , plus its in the perfect spot to the rye town, as u come out of the hotel just turn left and round the corner your straight in a town , with nice shops, so i went on the 10th, and as entering the hotel the place looked amazing, the stuff were very welcoming and helpfull, we was shown to our room which had everything we needed, huge bathroom, with lots of goodies for us to use, the bedroom was beautiful. with the view outside, soft bed, room was supplied with an iron and board in a little cupboard, hairdrier in the dressing table draw, mini bar with a price list, which was priced well i think , a cupboard which had a kettle in and tea or coffee which biscuits all free,.was plenty of room, and we had a balcony with chairs and a table. we had a dip in the swimming pool , which was a little cold, as they had only just opened it for us, if we had asked 20 minutes b4 hand it would of been ok . again we was supplied with all the things we needed in the changing rooms, a shower . shampoos body wash, fresh towels, and a hairdrier again, plus had a running machine and a cycle one,
we had a 3 course meal which i had asked for it to be bought to our room at 7;15pm and they was dead on time, and the food was (( great )), i really couldnt of asked for better, it was quiet and relaxing, the next morning we got a 3 course breakfast in bed which again was bought up to us in good time, plus my boyfriend got a choice of news papers he wanted in the morning. which they slipped under our door for when we woke up.
i cant wait to go back, we had a great time,

Better than expected!

We were a bit apprehensive after reading the reviews. There were six of us as a surprise for a friend. On arrival we were met by a receptionist who would have looked better placed in a dentist!. She managed to confuse us totally as one of our party was in the room adjacent to the car park but she made it sound as if it was a dungeon and every time they went back to the room it was through the car park - this was not the case! The hotel was chintzy but bearable. Our room was fine, very cold but wacked the heating up and it was lovely. We enjoyed the pool, and the sauna,. The jacuzzi was very cold and we couldnt get the steam cabinet to work but our friend nearly took of in it! The location was superb and we had a lovely breakfast with very attentive staff. Loved the resident cat! Would recommend it.

Old fashioned, traditional and family run but that is what we wanted. Fresh local produce, especially the fish caught that day excellent.

We had a better experience than some previous reviewers - but this hotel is something of a mixed bag. On the plus side, the room was bigger than expected (an intermediate grade room) and a lot of thought had gone into the bits and pieces provided free - bath robe, slippers, good range and quality of toiletaries, bottled water and a current Radio Times. There were two reasonably comfortable chairs (so often only one) but nowhere to work if you wanted that ( we didn't). The decoration of both the room and the hotel generally was somewhat faded and rather a mish mash of styles. The pool was out of order, which may have been a big problem for some, but did not bother us. No problem with the service provided by the staff at check in/out and at breakfast, which was good. The barman had no inhibitions in expressing his very little Englander opinions - but these did seem to match those of the quests he was taling to! So overall not bad for a three star, but expensive for what you get unless you take advantage of all the facilities - if they are working.
