A good location but away from the main town....quite a disappointing beach. The rooms are small and run down. The whole place needs an urgent makeover. The service and courtesy is almost mechanical.
The location inside the rainforest is good and the food spread quite elaborate. The spa experience was good.

Just returned from this beautiful resort and felt I had to write a review. Prior to going on our trip I had read several bad reviews and was therefore a bit apprehensive. However I found the resort to be superb. We had booked the superior chalet which has had such bad reviews hovever our room was clean well maintained and with a fantastic view of the bay. The maid service was exceptional with the room cleaned daily and fresh towels supplied daily. The staff everywhere were so friendly and went out of their way to make our holiday so special. It was my boyfriends birthday whilst we away and the staff at the Chinese restaurant went out of their way to make it special.
I did feel that the hotel lacked a beach bar for a drink in the evening. The views are so magnificent that it seems a shame that after dinner there is nowhere to have a sit and admire the views. We did however discover the Seashell bar in the next hotel which is accessible along the beach and is only a 2 minute walk . If it is high tide the hotel offer a free shuttle back to Berjaya. A visit to Telaga Harbour for a meal is also well worth a visit for a meal it is a 5 minute taxi ride away.

When I read some of the reviews before leaving for my holiday I was a bit worried. However, I was glad that I read that some of the rooms were outdated so as to set my expectations (my room was not dirty by any means) . We were in the delux chalet (next row of rooms behind the chalets that sit in the water) but it was one of the 'older' rooms so the bathroom had some marks in the tub etc and I was a little disappointed, but after a couple of days it didn't bother me. They are actually renovating the chalets and they look amazing inside ( I sneaked a peek in one!) so if a 'new' room is important to you maybe confirm it with the resort. It didn't worry me so much in the end!
The surroundings are absolutely amazing. Every day we saw up close a group of monkeys, then there was the goanna that insisted on sitting on our front steps. I've never had that experience before. The staff are absolutely wonderful, the resort's beach reformed me (previously I only used to go in up to my knees and then head back to the pool) but the water was so calm and clean that I never even dipped my toe in the pool. (if you sit under the first row of huts along the beach watch your head as they sit low - I can't tell you how many people we saw hit their head!)
I have to agree with some of the other reviews regarding the food. It wasn't the greatest. Get in early for buffet breakfast if you like cold milk in your cereal! The best meal we had at the resort was at the Thai restaurant - I can recommend that. Otherwise for $8rm head to the marina/harbour (5 min drive) and you will not be disappointed with any of the food there! We tried the Spanish, Italian and Steakhouse restaurants and I can recommend them all....But if you like decent meat (I forgot how good red meat could taste) with some simple steamed veges you will not be disappointed with the Steakhouse. (they do a great seafood platter too for 2 people for $120rm)
In regards to the island itself, I didn't enjoy Khua (main town) it seemed more like a local province so I felt a bit out of my comfort zone. Cheneng Beach is about a 2 km (maybe more!) of market stalls and restaurants and seems to be a bit more lively for tourists. Overall, it really is an island you go to for relaxation (it is not a 'party' island) which suited us just fine.

Just returned from the Berjaya Beach Resort, due to the many bad reports we were apprehensive about our choice before going, however this is a fantastic resort with a fantastic location.
It is an unbelieviable wildlife experience, if you don't like wildlife and are looking for entertainment this is the wrong place for you. We upgraded to a deluxe chalet it was comfortable and clean the only point I would make is that the bathroom could do with an upgrade - if you are looking for faults. The resort is well maintained the gardens are beautiful, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Although the resort is spread out the courtesy buses offer an excellent service and we never had to wait. There is no public transport on the island but all taxis are cheap and have a set fare and are readily available at the resort. We went to the harbour nearby to eat in the evenings excellent food and restaurants, taxi fare 10 RM (?1.50 approx).
The beach and pool were lovely, used the spa which was also excellent. Would definately recommend this resort and would love to return.

We just come back from Berjaya and stayed in the Junior Chalets on water for 3 days. The room and view is great, clean and tidy washroom, with comfortable and large bed. The shuttle service is acceptable; we need to wait outside for around 5 minutes. The beach is clean and very few people swimming in the morning. We do enjoy staying at Berjaya and think its worth to be a 5 star resort.
Also, the cable car and oriental village is very close. It's worth going there, as the view at the top of cable car is really great. And we did join the local tours to Pulau Payar and the mangrove swamp. Both places are good and I really love the sights and have wonderful experiences there.
The food of Orkid Ria restaurant is really delicious. The place is clean and comfortable. We did enjoy the food there. We also have a dinner at Bon Ton resort and the Nam restaurant there is also great but quite expensive.
But the resort breakfast is not so good, the food seems no taste and only with very few variety. We tried the breakfast near the lobby and the beach restaurant. Both of them are not so good.
