I can't fault this hotel. I stayed in a club room for two days. It was so modern and clean. The service on arrival was fantastic despite some confusion with our visas. The room was lovely, with good facilities. It had a very clean and modern bathroom and an extremely comfortable bed. The room was spacious and was well laid-out.
The hotel has several bars which were great, especially the Havana bar. The rooftop bar was quite nice on the warm nights although closed a little early for our liking. The restaurants served a good range of great food. The Japanese restaurant gives you the option to select your own food, mix up your own ingredients and have a chef cook it in front of you. The breakfast was great and very relaxing. None of the hassle that normally goes with hotel buffet breakfasts.
As a bonus this is an eco-friendly hotel although it makes no impact on the quality of your stay. It was truly a shame to have to leave, we would have loved to stayed longer.

Hotel has a good quality, service is perfect, restaurants are nice, clean and food is really very good (however spicy, but this is what you could expect). Rooms are very comfortable and quiet, they look really very good, but..... the smell coming out from the air conditioning is NOT acceptable - while you enter the room you feel terrible smell of mold and damp, you still feel it when you are inside for a longer time (and your clothes start to smell as well). When air conditioning is switched off and window is open (by chance! not always possible) the smell is gone. It seems that Rain Tree hotel doesn't clean the air conditioning system, along with the smell you breathe in lots of germs. Unacceptable. All the more such smell of damp and mold you feel ONLY in rooms and corridors, whereas in the restaurants and hall you don't feel it. This is the only complaint about the Rain Tree hotel. Guys - once you clean the air conditioning, your hotel will be perfect! Do something about it!!

Rain Tree is Comfortable Business Hotel

The Rain Tree Hotel is a nice, quiet, newer business hotel located in an upscale area of downtown Chennai. The rooms are modern and well maintained with marble showers and classy fixtures in the bathrooms. Beds are comfortable and rooms are quiet. Good wireless internet access everywhere. Staff are friendly and very polite. The Above Sealevel rooftop open air restaurant is a real treat with spectacular views of the city and sea and excellent food. Swimming pool is also rooftop next to good bar. Chinese restaurant is also excellent here. Breakfast buffet is plentiful but not overwhelming. This hotel is a reasonably priced alternative to the overcrowded, noisy and higher priced Park Sheraton down the street a block. My colleagues and I all prefer to stay at the Rain Tree now. Local good Thai restaurant (the Benjarong) is two blocks away.

I am in India 4 times a year on business. The first ever time i came to India i stayed at the Park Sherdian which is just round the corner to the Rain Tree.
When rates doubled in one year, i looked for another hotel, and the Rain Tree fitted the bill, i took a chance and have never looked back. Unfortunately i cant see it being long before they pick up on it and increase their rates to match but still.
The Positives
1) Staff are trained well.
2) The decor of the rooms is nice and modern and has all the amenities you need for a business hotel and also somewhere for familes / couples etc. If i came to India on holiday i would still stay here.
3) Good location - south Chennai, close to a couple of nice beaches, and in general the less busy area of the city, much less hustle and bustle than central and north (industrial Chennai)
4) Food is generally good - the restaurant on the Terrace is great if youve got someone to share it or just to go and have a meal of an evening with good panoramic views of the city. The chinese is also good but lacks a bit of atmosphere.
5) Good choice of TV stations available for when you are crashing out at the end of the day.
NEGATIVES & TIPS
1) The swimming pool is a bit tiny as its on the top terrace which is nice but as far as spending a weekend lounging around there which i sometimes do when on business for more than a week its not a particularly social place to be, as there are only 3 seats! In comparison to the park sheratons pool area which is much better. (you get what you pay for in that respect)
2) if you are staying there on a weekend, bear in mind there may be weddings / functions going on - with this in mind i once had a room on the 2nd floor and all i could hear was the party, so requested to be moved higher up. After this i always ask to stay as high up as possible to stop any chance of noise. If you know anywhere in India is noisy from horns, people and bustle during the day so thats the last thing you want to hear when you are trying to relax.
3) check out the exact rates you will pay first - local "luxury" tax will be added which is usually quite a large percentage of your bill, so know where you stand first - i witnessed an English man tearing into the receptionist disgruntled by the luxury tax he had been charged but it had not been quoted on their website direct. So make sure you know where you stand cost wise before hand.
Thats it really, all in all a great business hotel, might not compare to some of the other larger chains, but you pay for them, this is still relatively cheap in comparison to the growth of the city.

stayed in Mar 2008
I stayed here for seven nights spread over two visits, in March 2008. The place is immaculately kept with very good rooms and all the facilities you might expect. The staff are helpful, efficient and friendly. The main restaurant has good food, at a reasonable price for this sort of hotel, and operates well - but offers only a limited menu outside the main dining hours. You find this out by trial and error as the rooms do not contain much information about the dining facilities – or any of the other facilities for that matter. The bathroom does not contain a bath, only a large walk in shower - presumably something to do with being an ecohotel. They have smoking and non-smoking rooms but check carefully at reception that you have got the right one. The travel desk booked me a very good car and driver for a tour of Chennai's tourist sites. It is possible to book this hotel by email and it seems to work. The hotel is mainly used by business people, some tourists and the occasional tour group. Recommended if you can afford it - its good value for this sort of thing.
