My wife and I had our wedding at the Hotel in October of 2006. The accomodations were above and beyond. The Steyer Opera house provided a great atmosphere for our special day, the food was outstanding, and the service was professional, polite, and it seemed they were truly enjoying their job. They were also very helpful and knowledgeable in the planning of our wedding.
The rooms were excellent as well, beautifully decorated, comfortable, and always clean. Everyone we came in contact with while staying at the hotel were very nice and always willing to to go out of their way to accomodate us.
The restaurant was also excellent. The menu had great selections from sandwiches to steaks, and provided a nice place to meet and have a couple appetizers.
Also, the location was great. Being right downtown, we were able to get out and about without any hassle of transportation.
Last but not least, my in-laws loved it. They came from California for the wedding, and on several occasions, then and since, have commented on how lovely the hotel was, and how impressed they were with everything.
We are n the process of planning a trip back to Iowa soon, and look forward to staying at the hotel again...and would highly reccomend staying at this hotel if visiting Decorah.

An elegant hotel in a charming midwestern town

We had a wedding reception in the Steyer Opera House in the Hotel Winneshiek and several of our guests,as well as the bridal couple, stayed in the hotel. We can't say enough about the accommodations, service, and hotel staff. Our guests loved the facility, the reception was beautiful and the staff went out of their way to insure a pleasant stay for everyone.

My wife and I had our wedding reception at the Hotel Winn. It was absolutely wonderful. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and polite. Most of our guests came in from out of town and were amazed to find such a wonderful hotel in small town Iowa! Many of our guests still comment on how great the wedding reception was to this day, two years later.
As to the bad reviews posted above, I would not take too much stock in them. Obviously the hotel would not shut down the reception, stop serving alcohol or call the cops unless they had valid concerns.
We have had countless great experiences there, as had many of our friends who have stayed there in the past.

My wife and I live in Iowa City, and are always looking for weekend getaways (without having to drive to Chicago!). After a two and a half hour drive up to Iowa's "North Country," the periphery of the town was bland, but we immediately fell in love with the heart of Decorah. The Hotel Winneshiek was magnificent -- so clean and it seemed everything was done just right. The staff was very pleasant and gracious. We had a wonderful time, and came away feeling relaxed. Decorah is a jewel, a magical place. We will definitely return to the Hotel Winneshiek!

We stay at the Hotel Winneshiek whenever we are in Decorah (once or twice a year) and we absolutely love the property. The hotel is very quaint and is located right downtown in Decorah. There are a lot of great restaurants and shops nearby.
I read the bad reviews about the wedding and I would just like to say that my best friend had her reception at the Hotel Winneshiek and had no complaints that I'm aware of. We were able to get in the evening before and the day of the wedding to do all the decorating. The food was good, if standard hotel fare, and the servers were nice. As a surprise for the bride and groom I coordinated with the event planner to have chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne put in the bride and groom's room. The reception was so well done that it made me want to do my wedding all over again. It felt like a big city wedding with all the perks of small town hospitality. It was a fantastic night and one I'll always remember.
I'm sorry that the wedding for the bride and groom who are posting on here didn't work out but please don't let that keep you from staying at this wonderful jewel of a hotel.
