It is a good thing that I did not read any reviews on this hotel prior to our arrival, otherwise I would have been a lot more apprehensive.
Our experience: an old and quirky hotel which has a lot to offer: great breakfast, warm, welcoming and very helpful staff and a wonderful pub complex on its premises that enables you to sample some of Edinburgh's famous (or infamous) pub scene. Now this asset also forms the hotel's main curse and that has everything to do with the noise level at night that not only comes from the Three Sisters pub but also from a resident's bar inside the hotel itself.
Our room was situated not too badly: first floor on the back, so the pub noise was not exactly overwhelming, Nevertheless, on our first night, it was clearly audible and went well into the wee hours of the night, while on our second night we did not have any problems at all.
The room was rather nondescript and small, with some weird hooks and attachments hanging on the wall, but otherwise clean and rather comfortable and having a nice shower. The best thing about this hotel however is its staff, that went out of their way to help us get settled in Auld Reekie and find our way around.
All in all a great place if you're not too fuzzy about the room and enjoy the night life.

We arrived on Friday morning and the outside was very impressive, lovely court yard and what looked to be a great drinking area outside. Once inside it had a shabby lobby and dirty hall ways. Staff were really friendly and young and only too willing to help with any queries we had. Our room was tiny shabby and poorly lit. Not great for girlies trying to put on some serious make up!! Food was not great, breakfast was the usual stuff you would get in any average hotel so can not fault it. Right beside Grass Market street would recommend if you want to go on a mad weekend away and are not fussy about accomodation then this place is perfect!!

I'm not ding-ing this hotel because of the so-so location, or for the shabbiness of the grounds. But, what I am ding-ing this hotel for is the attached Three Sisters Bar. If you're under the age of 25 and looking to simply get wasted and need a convenient place to stay, Tailors Hall is great. If you're hoping to have a quite place to sleep, a safe entry, and an entry to a hotel that isn't riddled with glass from broken bottles, and blodied tissue from the bar fights, then Tailors Hall isn't for you. Just say no.
The one good thing? The 'free' breakfast in the mornings was quite good.

I was booked to stay here on business. This is a totally unsuitable hotel for the business traveller because you will get little sleep. I got them to move me twice (so i had three different rooms) due to noise. The club music (kareoke by the sound of it one night) is very loud until after 1 o'clock in the morning. Eventually I got into a room on the top floor on the other side of the hotel and I could still hear it (though quiet enough to sleep).
The rooms are maintained to a low standard - dirty/mouldy bathrooms, holes in the walls and internet connections not working.
The positives are: The first few breakfasts I was there the chef did fantastic scrambled eggs if you asked for them. Unfortunately the last morning he had been replaced by a different chef and she overcooked them to a wet amorphous mass. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The Mussel and Steak restaurant round the corner is excellent.
