This is an adequate hotel with a decent restaurant. In Greymouth, there is not much to choose from so this is a good, (if far from town) choice. The room we had was tiny but clean. It was quiet, unlike other reports here. Maybe we were lucky. We were there over Easter weekend, but the hotel seemed pretty full. The staff was very accomodating and cheerful. Not much else to say about this place, but it was fine for our purposes.
I don't see a benefit to staying in Greymouth (Grimmace, as one of the locals called it!) since the town is pretty featureless and certainly not lively. It's a place to catch the TranzAlpine train (which is overrated, by the way) and not much else. We did have some decent pub grub at the nice bar across from the train station.

Fine, but noisy and dated

This was a disappointment. Described as a boutique hotel in the various guide books, and cornering the upper end of the market in Greymouth, I can only assume Greymouth has its own standards of upper and boutique. One night was plenty.
The location is a fair way out of town, so you do need transport. However the town is something else as well. We stayed on a Saturday night, and the town was deserted. We did find a good meal though. On a Sunday it was more deserted. This was fine, I am all for tradition and family time, just be aware that it is very old-town.
The hotel was clean, but a little dated. The biggest problem for me was that you could hear the boiler and fan for the neighbouring rooms and bathrooms, and it was very loud. It also went on for ages. On the plus side, there was plenty of parking and the hotel was out of town.
Whether there is anywhere better to stay, I don't know. But the beach town of Hokitika seemed like a more scenic bet, if still quiet. It was ok.

The hotel was pleasant enough. Nothing outstanding to mention but on the other nothing really bad to say. I understand the hotel is in the process of being refurbished and I hope that includes the pool area as that does need it. Room was fine, bright and airy, our fan was noisy too though. We ate in the restaurant the first night of our stay which was good as was the breakfast.
The staff were all friendly especially the waitresses at breakfast who definitely enjoyed some banter!
Our second night we ate at the Australasian pub opposite the hotel where the food was good and of good value, lots of locals in which is a good sign.
Can't give any comments on the town itself as we used our stay here as a base to do other things and the hotel is quite a way out of town.

If you really MUST stay in Greymouth, then the Ashley hotel is a pretty safe bet. We were upgraded to a three bedroom unit (for the two of us!). Clearly, we had plenty of space and it's pretty hard to find fault with the Ashley, which was modern, clean and good value accomodation. It's at least a couple of miles from the centre of town, so walking's not really an option.
Greymouth itself doesn't have much to recommend it. We went out looking for a meal at about 8pm and the choice was limited to McDonalds or a carvery in the centre of town. Having chosen the latter, we were rushed through and out of the door by 8.40 as the place was closing. Stay somewhere else if you can - this town is utterly charmless. Doesn't matter who you talk to, nobody's got a good word to say about the place - and I now see why!
