We just returned from Rome. Stayed at Hotel Alexandra for 3 nights. Pros: Location is close to Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, metro and also nice walking routes to many other areas, like the Borghese Park/Gallery. The people at the front desk were not great to very good, depending on who was at the desk. The Bellman was extremely kind and helpful, which is always so appreciated. Breakfast was the best we experienced in Rome, but if you are comparing it to American, don't expect too much. Room was very clean.
Cons: When we arrived they showed us to a room that was just awful. I couldn't believe they expected us to use it (Room 106 I believe). They tried to tell us that it was a standard room and that's what we paid for. We asked if they had a room in the "standard" category that was nicer and they showed us to a room that was much better. Had to wait another hour for it to get cleaned, but it was well worth it.
Bathroom, as you read about in Europe, was the typical very small bathroom, but was our least favorite of all our stays in Italy (also visited Florence and Venice).
If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room on the inside. We were told it is not included in the "standard" rate room. We faced the street and the street had a metal grate which, when cars drove over, made a clanging noise. Pretty much got used to it, but not completely!
Overall, would say this hotel is good/fair. As is mentioned in many of these posts, hotels in Europe are small and not the kinds we are used to in the States. So just be prepared for that.

We just got back from a wonderful stay in Rome. We stayed at the Hotel Alexandra for five nights. We had two rooms, a "deluxe double" and a "standard double". The deluxe double was our room (room #263). While smaller than US standards, it was an excellent size compared to other hotels we have stayed in in Europe. The king size bed was two singles made into one (which did leave a line in the middle, a bit more padding there might have made the difference) and while a litle harder than I like, was adequate after a long day. It was very nicely decorated with a great television, which included satellite tv. The closet had mirrored doors and plenty of room for all of our things. We did have a small balcony which was greatly appreciated because I think now all hotels in Rome are "non-smoking" and when I commented upon this at check-in, the front desk attendant was more than accomodating (sympathetic perhaps?), telling me that we could smoke on the balcony "because we would be outside" and even brought us an ashtray to keep there. The bathroom was marvelous by European standards (still comparing to other previously stayed in hotels in Europe) with a great bathtub for long soaks after long days and a hand held shower attachment for quick showers in the morning. The pedestal sink had enough room to set things on the side along with a small table with room enough for all our toiletries. Our son's room (329) was a standard double, and while not as roomy as ours, was fine for them. Their bathroom only had a stand up shower and no balcony, but it also had a closet.
The breakfast was great with scrambled eggs, bacon, pastries, frest fruit, cereral, all laid out in a very appetizing way and a perfect start to the mornings before setting out on a long day. Great money-saving feature of this hotel.
The hotel staff was very nice. They helped us get anywhere we wanted to go with directions, where to get things we needed (our luggage was lost). Anything we asked of them was met with a smile. It was much appreciated.
THE BEST PART OF THIS HOTEL is the LOCATION. The Metro stop "Barberini" is at the bottom of the small hill the street is on, and the bus stop is right around the corner from that. The Spanish steps and the Tivoli fountain are within walking distance (just ask at the desk, they will point you in the right direction) and all other attractions were either a short Metro trip or bus ride away. I would recommend buying a three day "all transport" card to make traveling around very easy.
I am a bit of a nosy-nellie, and when we left our room one day the maid was cleaning the room next to ours (262) she allowed me to peek in and look at it. She said it was a room for parents with children. It was larger with a king size bed and a couch which folded out into a bed with a bathroom like ours. If I was staying with little ones, it would be perfect. It did face the front of the hotel with two windows and the maid said it was "noisier" but windows close and its a fairly quiet street.
All in all, if and when we go back to Rome, this is where we will stay again.

Hotel Alexandra was PEFECT (November 2007). We were a little worried about mixed TA reviews, but we had a mini-suite that was GORGEOUS (with large modern bathroom that had a Jacuzzi tub and half glass enclosure for the hand-held-mounted shower).
The location of the hotel on the Via Veneto in the Barbarini area was spectacular and easy to find - on the same block as a major Metro station and walking distance to everything except the Vatican, which was a quick 3 stop ride.
The staff was charming and helpful, and breakfast was first class and amazing (we're still thinking about that breakfast in the beautiful breakfast room that felt like an outdoor garden indoors -- fresh breads, cakes, cereals, hot scrambled eggs, meats, cheeses, yogurt, fresh fruit, fresh fruit salad, cappucino served to the table).
As reported by other TA writers, the beds were hard, but that was GOOD. We booked the room directly with the hotel via email from their website with no problems. Perhaps the trick is to go off-season; the hotel was quiet, rather empty and just perfect. We would recommend it to everyone.

I planned on staying in this hotel when I saw it during my previous trip to Rome. I love the street and the location: very close to the main attractions, train station and metro. Some stuff was kind if rude. But in general my experience was pretty good. The room was small, but it is expected when you are in Europe. I would stay there again.
