First, let me start off by saying I was in Winnipeg on business, and did not pay for nor contact the hotel in anyway. Everything was covered when we got there. The hotel itself is fairly old - the furnishings and carpeting and what not in the halls and lobby scream 50s. A lot of dark oak, so it's definitely not your modern hotel. The pool seemed cool, especially with a water slide, but I didn't have time to check it out. One of the night's we stayed there, a bunch of thunderstorms moved though. When I left the room the next morning, there were mini trashcans all over the hallway catching dripping water from the leaky roof. These trashcans were literally right outside the door. This made the halls smell. The actual rooms weren't bad, but not great either. The location is a few miles from downtown, but there is a mall, restaurants, and a movie theatre within walking distance. However, the morning we were leaving, the front desk person asked us if we were checking out (there was a group of us). I usually just leave, since the room is already covered and I didn;t ahve any incidentals. My co-worker went over to hand in his key and they tried to make him sign a document that said he would agree to cover the room expenses if the credit card they had on file wouldn't work. I've never heard of a hotel doing this. He refused to sign it and got some attitude because of it. Again, I didn't have this problem. If I would go back to Winnipeg, I would probably stay somewhere else, but if this was all that was left, I would stay there again.

Viscount Gort was recommended by nearby university for a business conference weekend. It's nicely located near the airport and close to the city center.
The staff was helpful and nice though the computer system seemed to be overly cumbersome and couldn't easily find my name and reservation. Turns out they had the wrong date listed for my arrival, so they had to go through paper records. I stayed in two different rooms through the course of four nights...both were adequate and clean.
The second room's TV was crap and watching TV was watching though an un-adjustable yellow-orange haze. The bathroom had no vent so was always steamed up during showers and, well, smelled for obvious reasons.
The hotel looks old and a little dingy from the outside, but inside is pretty nice. Carpets and such could probably use an update. The parking situation is pretty bad when it's full; there's just not much room. One of the hotel's bar/restaurants has overpriced drinks. The sandwichy-type place is fine. The "nice" restaurant is dressy and very expensive. Why anyone would go to a hotel like the Viscount for a classy restaurant experience is beyond me. The place looked totally empty. No wonder, the entrees are $20-$30. But having eating options there is convienient and the free breakfast vouchers are nice. Just order a glass of water: drinks aren't included.

Well, first I must say that they are undergoing renovations at the moment, so maybe I didn't see them at their best.
However, that doesn't excuse the poor state of the furnishings and linen. My room had 2 equally uncomfortable beds and the sheets were so thin you could have read a newspaper through them. The pillow cases were also poor quality with unsavoury looking pillows very visible inside them. The bed cover also looked grubby.
The carpet in my room was stained and smelly and the bathroom had seen better days. The water from the shower was an unpleasant shade of brown (perhaps also due to the building work)
The hotel is very well situated for drivers wanting to use the main routes within Winnipeg; the downside is that you can hear them all doing exactly that!
Perhaps the building work includes replacing the windows and doors in the rooms with soundproof ones. There was incessant traffic noise throughout the night I stayed there. Eventually, I found that turning the air conditioning on full produced a contant rattle which successfully drowned out any other noises, and I finally got about 3 hours sleep.
One big plus is that the staff (contrary to appearances, in some cases) were very friendly and helpful when approached. The breakfast, which was included in the price of the room was pretty good, though I found the exclusion of beverages from the free ticket a little bizarre - maybe guests expect free champagne? Oh, and the free shuttle to the airport is a quite impressive deal.
On the whole then, a below average experience. It would be interesting to see how the hotel performs when it is finished.

recently stayed here for two nights. at first i was very disappointed. we checked in around 1:00 p.m. so it was in the middle of the rooms being cleaned. i was really turned off by how dirty the hallways were with all the dirty dishes, beer bottles etc. the carpets throughout the hotel are in desperate need of replacing. the beds were comfortable and besides the carpet, the room seemed clean. the toilet in my room didn't flush well at all and you had to hold the handle down for it to work. the staff was only lukewarm friendly. at in the bar one night and didn't think the food was good. the second night we had a party of 12 so we booked a private room. it was not that expensive for the private room, service was excellant, there was a private bathroom in the room. everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and they were large portions. the pool area is not that great for a "workout" swim but there is a waterslide which was fun, the hot tub was very hot and the area appeared to be clean. breakfast was included but you only had a choice of about 5 items and you could have purched the "bacon & eggs" for under $3 so that was not great benefit and the beverages were rather expensive. although i wouldn't hate returning if i had to, i think i would look elsewhere.

I stayed here 2 nights for business (not my choice). The hotel is ok, room was big and clean, but bathroom a little old. Staff was not very friendly. It is a 10 minute drive from the ariport and about the same to downtown.
One weird thing is that they advertise a free breakfast but then beverages are not included. $1.80 for coffee, almost $3 for orange juice, so you end up paying for your breakfast!
