This is a wonderful architectural hotel. It's elegance is surpassed only by the staff, who are very gracious and accommodating. This hotel is a bit off the beaten path in a very nice area within San Jose called Escazu. The high ceilings and winding staircases provide excellent ambience. Art work by local Artists is displayed for purchase in the staircase gallery. The rooms are well priced and the beds are very comfortable. We enjoyed evenings on the covered terrace with brilliant sunset diplays. The restaurant is well known, La Luz, the food is excellent , fresh and served with style. The hotel also provides an wonderful team of drivers which we found very friendly and accommodating as well. We returned there on our second business trip and will choose this hotel upon our return to the area.

This hotel is located in the Escazu area. It is situated on a hill with a two-lane road right outside the hotel gates. It is somewhat difficult to find from the airport because there are very few signs and it really helps to speak Spanish in order to locate it. The area is not a walking area due to the two-lane road. The facility has a beautiful location and very interesting architecture. I must say that it has a feel of a home. The building is old and could use some updates. The bathroom is dark (with Spanish tiles). The sheets could be fresher..they have a slight odor to them. The balcony and the view is stunning. The breakfast is terrible/terrible... The restaurant highly expensive but beautiful (a slight stale odor). You are better off to go to Ceviche down the street for fresh Peruvian dishes. I would not recommend the concierge service at this hotel. They are trained to recommend tourist traps of what north americans expect of the tropics...I would return to this hotel because it is a special place with lots of character, stunning views of San Jose and a beautiful pleasant staff. It feels like home.

This was a lovely quiet hotel in San Jose with friendly and extreamely helpful staff. Our hotel in the next city we were going to got cancelled, and they helped us find amazing things to do in the meantime. They set up tours for us that were well worth the price, and helped us set up anything that we needed. There was also a restaurant on site with a fresh Costa Rican style continental breakfast that was delicious! Loved it and would go again. It looks just like the photos! Oh and ask to go to the top floor to see the view and the largest suites at the top (if vacant) AWESOME!!!

The Alta is a great place to stay. It is only a 20 minute drive from the airport and has fantastic views over San Jose (ask for a first floor room or higher). The rooms are very clean and comfortable and there is a nice pool. The hotel is quite quirky and interesting. The restaurant is expensive but top class. There's a cheap bar/restaurant 4 minutes walk down the road. The downside is it's a way out of town, but it's a perfect place to stay on the way to or from the airport

My wife and I stayed at the hotel on the first and last nights of our one week vacation in Costa Rica. The Hotel is great. The rooms all have either private balconies or, on the first floor, patios. There is a great view of the valley from the rooms above the first floor and also from the very good resteraunt. --Save room for dinner because it is a treat!
It is out of the way in the suburb of Santa Ana. It is quiet and well maintained.
