This was my fourth - and last - stay at what used to be a great little hotel find in Melbourne. Simply, it is now dirty and shabby, and with a housekeeping staff that should be fired. I visited months ago, and the upholstery of the furniture of the room was covered in stains, and the heating did not work. Returning to this same room months later, the room was still dirty and the heating still did not work, with the heating unit held up against the wall with pieces of cardboard (at this price!!!!) Moved to another room, which had the previous guest's coffee spilt over the bedside table, I asked twice to have it cleaned up, as well as the growth of mildew in the shower wiped away. Neither was done. And as for the noise of the surrounding buildings, pack your ear plugs. This was once a great and very quaint hotel, it is now a shabby shadow of what it once was. Look elsewhere - they don't deserve your business when you can find better at the same rate.

Stayed here with other family members this weekend. I'm glad I left the cat at home - the rooms were so small there would not have been room to swing him. Even the "suite" was a similar size to many hotel rooms.
There were other problems also. As others have indicated, Saturday nights are very noisy in this part of Melbourne, and sleep is likely to be interrupted. There was an overpowering stench of cleaning products in one of the rooms which persisted after the bathroom light/exhaust fan had been on overnight. This room had fixed windows and no prospect of natural ventilation. Despite the fact that the cleaners had obviously been there, no one had checked the fridge and there was an expired bottle of milk left by a previous occupant.
It fell well below the standard of a four-star property, and I would have difficulty recommending it to anyone.
OH WHAT A NIGHT - METRO MELBOURNE

My husband and I stayed at Metro Hotel - Bank Place Melbourne on Saturday 3rd May and Sunday 4th May. Unfortunately, due to the noise of nearby nightclub, it was impossible to get any sleep on the Saturday night. I noticed the advertising wording on website states "contemporary hotel sitting quietly". I believe this to be misleading and false advertising.(or only applies to mid week and days). When I approached the night staff in the early hours of Sunday morning I was told "it is impossible to sleep in the noisy rooms". The music and noise stopped at 5am. If would be nice to be told of the noise problem on Saturday nights, before booking - perhaps some people would like to party with the young ones and it would not matter. Fortunately, the friendly staff on Sunday morning moved us to a quieter room - although the night club did not open on Sunday night, it was obvious as we could not hear the traffic noise it would have been quieter, but we would not take the chance and book again. It really was a shame as everything else regarding the hotel was good, but it was a bit like ordering a nice meal at a restaurant and not being able to eat it and the Management well aware of this.

I stayed at this hotel for 10 nights with my husband and 12 year old son in a one bedroom apartment on the 8th floor. Our room was located at the end of the corridor near the lift, which you could hear of a night time. As well as the people above you walking around but it was by no means unbearable.
The only things that I would be able to complain about was that our room overlooked the rooftops of the buildings next door and you could here the noise from the motors on their roof of a night. At about 9.00pm every night you could also here the staff from the nearby pubs/reastaurants emptying the bottles into the clean away bins. I thought that I would have difficulty sleeping, but after the first night or two the noise really wasn't that noticeable and I also thought that there would be a lot of noise from the establishments nearby, but the only night they were a bit noisy was on a Friday and Saturday night, but after about midnight all was quiet.
The other thing is that the pillows are really soft, which I didn't like but the staff were happy to provide me with extra ones.
The room was always clean and tidy with full size pump bottles of soap, hand cream and shaving gel beside the bathroom vanity as well as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the bathroom. The bath was small but after days of shopping/sightseeing I still managed to have a soak, but then again I am only five feet tall.
It is well located within easy walking distance of Flinders Street Station, the Crown Casino and Aquarium as well as shops and the tram. I made the mistake of asking where the nearest grocery store was and was directed to an IGA store about 2 mins away, but it is very expensive for day to day items, so it is better to walk to Coles Central, which is about a 10 minute walk away. We also looked up two places in the phone book only to get there and find out they had closed. When we got back to our room we discovered that the phone books were three years old.
A good way to get around is the free City Circle Tram and City Circle Bus which stop at various locations around the city centre. I also advise taking the train out to Spotswood and visiting the Scienceworks Museum, they have heaps of hands on activities and the plantiurm is a great way to see the solar system. If going to the Melbourne Zoo catch the train from Flinders Street Station as it stops at the front of the Zoo. We also visited Galactic Circus which is an Amusement Arcade at the Crown Casino and we all had heaps of fun.
