We stayed at the Tubkaak as part of our honeymoon and when I read the last review I thought did we stay in the same place! Yes, this hotel is a boutique resort away from the hustle and bustle but if you want chill out time I don't think it gets much better than this.
Personally, I like a good hotel but nothing too formal or stuffy. This places ticks all the boxes.
Out of all the hotels we've stayed in Thailand, the Tubkaak has to be one of our favourites. I think it's the food that makes this place. There's a new set course menu every night in addition to the normal menu. We did go to Ao Nang and had a great time but we enjoyed the food at the hotel so much, we ate there for the rest of our stay. We don't normally do this but it was just so tasty! The wine is reasonably priced too. After staying at the Tubkaak we went on to the Sarojin at Khao Lak - that was much more expensive.
We hired a long tail boat and the hotel arranged a picnic for us. A great day out and the picnic was top notch. Krabi is a beautiful place.
The rooms are not huge but you don't need a huge room. The double bath is great! I have great memories of sitting on our balcony with a beer watching a thunderstorm in the afternoon, after a days sunbathing.
The staff are lovely too. It's fab, cannot rate it highly enough!

We were greeted with exceptional service, the staff were relaxed and calm yet very professional. We found our deluxe room to be spacious, and I enjoyed reading a book on the balcony while overlooking the pool. My husband and I relaxed in our outdoor bath and experienced various massages at The Spa which we found therapeutic and envigorating.
We spent our time reading, swimming in the pool and ocean, walking along the beach, playing chess, drinking cocktails, watching TV.
We ventured out one night to Ao Nang, to buy some things from the market and have a quick dinner. The taxi/car fare was 600 baht there and 400 baht return and the ride took 20 minutes at the most.
We enjoyed every single dish we ordered at the restaurant on site, always choosing the Thai meals. I have an allergy to peanuts, and they took extra care in preparing my meals. The staff always remembered without me having to remind them.
Unfortunately, we decided to hire scooters on the second last day at the resort. I was very inexperienced and ended up having an accident, I rode into a tin fence. The hotel staff were on the scene shortly afterwards and kindly drove me to a private hospital in Krabi where I received prompt service. The staff were very compassionate and dressed my wounds daily, massaged my sore wrist, sent flowers and spread the word that I had lost an earring at the crash site. The staff at the neighbouring hotel Carlton-Ritz (building in progress) kindly spent time searching - and they found it! I couldn't have asked for anything else in this time of need.
My husband and I are hoping to return in the next year or two. There is a knee-deep pool which would be suitable for toddlers (under supervision), this may come in handy down the track!

This was our 5th visit to Thailand and the first 4 times were wonderful as we stayed in K'oh Samui. This was our first time to Krabi and we will not be going back. I honestly have no idea how this could be the #1 hotel on Trip Advisor as I can't even begin to remember all the negatives - but here's a short list:
1) Completely Isolated! This is not a good thing as a) there is only one restaurant that gouges you at 3X the price of what Thai food costs anywhere else. The food itself is only average and the menu gets old after more than a few days - but they've got you trapped so you've no choice...b) the Hotel charges you 600 baht every time you want to go anywhere (we rented scooters after 2 days so were ok)
2) Beach is terrible! Lots of debris and very muddy. Plus when the tide is out the beach recedes about 500 meters and it looks like a barren wasteland. Instead we swam in the pool - which is okay if you like the fact that all guest rooms and guests face the pool due to the layout. It is simply not a good layout.
3) Rooms just "ok". For the same price you could stay in beautifully appointed, much larger rooms (or villas) at Tong Sai Bay or Imperial Boat House in Samui. Both highly recommended. The outside shower/bath probably the best feature. Rooms themselves are tiny and no place to sit other than on the bed - so don't plan on spending too much time in the room (not that there is anwhere to go within 20 miles of the hotel!!)
3) Rude staff. My wife and I are very easy going people and after 3 days here asked if we could check out as we wanted to try a different location. I was told no - even though i offered to pay a cancellation penalty of "two days". I was then asked if we'd still be checking out the next day though they would not refund a penny. Nice touch guys - we'll keep your money but you're free to go!
4) Krabi downtown - if you do find a way to get to town get ready to be accosted by an army of rude Tailors (mostly Indian) who block your path while you're trying to walk down the street. And get ready to answer the question "Where Are You From?" a million times as they try and push you into their stores. Note that this was not the case in Samui.
Overall, the "resort" feels very cramped yet isolated and they gouge you every which way they can. This is the first review I've ever written but I feel like the truth needs to be told as we've 4 benchmarks in K'oh Samui to compare this to. Go to Samui - it's a beautiful, beautiful island and don't waste your time or money in a place like TubKrap!!! You've been warned :)

We stayed at the Tubkaak for four nights and had a very enjoyable time.
First the negatives: it is a boutique resort and as such there is a limited choice of restaurants - in fact only one. Not a problem for four days but could be a problem if you were looking for more variety in the short term or were staying longer than us.
Also the rooms which are brilliant are not very large. Not a problem for us but could be a problem for some people who like a bit of space.
Cab fare into Ao Nang - the nearest town is three times the Bangkok rate and takes 25 minutes so after trying this once we did not bother again.
Beach is small and when the tide is in its gone. Also a lot of the detritus from the islands and sailing folk washes onto the beach. The resort staff do their best to clean this but it is only average.
We are keen walkers and the beach is not a long walk so you end up doing a few laps to work up a sweat.
No gym. Could benefit from a small gym ie. weight machine, step machine, bike machine and treadmill.
The positives : great service, friendly and unobtrusive, beautiful position and away from it all, some other resorts along the beach to visit, great views of islands particularly at sunset with the sun setting behind the islands, beautiful pool, good Wifi, great food in the restaurant with good variety and no fuss.
Rooms are first class with outside/inside shower. We were upgraded into an upstairs room so thanks for that Tubkaak.
About our trip into Ao Nang - arrived at about 7. 30 in the pouring rain (tail end of Burma monsoon) and the cab driver said call me when you have finished and I'll take you back. We called him at 9.45 and he had gone home. There was not a cab or tuk tuk in site by then! imagine Thailand with no tuk tuk or cab? so after expressing some concern we dropped in to a tour company who books drivers and got back for 600 baht. Seems to be something going on with the cabs there......
However there was plenty of variety in Ao Nang and even tho' it is a bit like Patong i.e. glitz and bling it has a nicer feel and less threatening.
