we spent 2 nights here and wish it was more. Great location, super views, quiet, and staff were excellent. We had a 1 bedroom apartment which was starting to get a bit tired decor wise, but it was well appointed. We went to the top floor for a swim and sauna, this def needs some attention..pretty dated and just lacking atmosphere in general.
Easy walk to The Rocks, Darling Harbour etc. Would certainly stay there again

We were coming to Sydney for a vital professional exam, so needed a quiet, clean room I could sleep and study in, with responsive staff in case of any problems. I am glad to say we got it at the Somerset.
As it was low season, we got a good rate on a corner room with a view from the bedroom of the centrepoint tower. Darling Harbour is 2 min walk away, and The Rocks is only 15min or so. Study breaks by the water or out shopping were enjoyed greatly.
The little cafe under the hotel was better than it looks, good service and reasonable-value fare. FoH staff at the hotel were proficient and friendly. The pool is a unique (in a good way) experience - you, in your bathers, are eye-to-eye with desk-jockeys at the accounting firm over the road, most of whom respectfully drew their blinds! But the spa was lovely, that rare find, a jacuzzi heated adequately.
Only mark-downs on an otherwise solid performance (one of the best hotel experiences for us in a while, but we are pretty picky) were housekeeping (greasy fingerprints on the windows on arrival, and cobwebs in a corner or two) and room service (food arrived lukewarm, covered in foil - not a good look).
That said, we would stay there again, which is more than I can say for recent experiences in other hotels in Australia. Good service is really hard to find!

I stayed here 5 nights in July, 2007 and would highly recommend the Somerset. The desk service was quite helpful - not sure what others are writing about. I stayed in a premium queen which was MUCH nicer than the deluxe room (which a friend was staying in.). Do ask for high speed internet, which is not available in all rooms. The room was modern and larger than a standard hotel room. Great location for Darling Harbor area.

booked a spa suite through wotif for 2 nights. front desk staff rude on arival. our room which was smaller than expected. 2 tvs that did not work. neither did the toilet. called reception to have problems fixed, and right after a large thick glass light fixture fell for the celing on my partner who very luckily was not too badley hurt -though bruised.
on calling assistant manager when i explained what happened asked "so... would you like me to come up there or are you right?" i said it i am not, and to come up at once. when he did finaly arive with the maintance man we were offered a bottle of wine to make up for it. i was appauld & demanded another room. we waited 1/2 an hour before we moved.
in our next room i wanted to cook dinner. asked for wine glasses because we had none, although the other did. we were refused &hung up on. same treatment when asking for an ice tray, butter, towels and only got these standard things (for a claimed 4 & 1/2 star hotel) after many heated calls to reception and my partner went down to pcik them up! as soon as i started dinner the smokealarm went off (through the entire building) for no reason. then realised it was situated in the middle of the very small kitchen. 2mins later we had 5 firefighters ran in, and they too could not understand why it had gone off.
the next morning i went to watch tv and it switched off. soon found out we had no electrcity at all. waited for maintance for almost 2 hrs and only got some help after going down to front desk in person to complain.
after debating with the managers, hotel owners, and wotif itself, we were finaly given half our money back and our 2nd & last night in the 2 bed penthouse by 5pm. everything from then on went well, except the entry cards they gave us for the penthouse did not work and we had to go to reception, yet again, to change them.
i go to many hotels and this by far is worst yet. i have got better service in cheap motels. be warned!
