We stayed at Somerset on Salamanca twice in the last two years. The first time we had a studio room, facing the river, which was quite nice. However, this time we took the two bedroom "de-luxe" apartment for 6 nights, the price of which averaged at $216 per night [weekends are more expensive]. The apartment is very spacious, but it has a lot of shortcomings: first of all one has to start at the Somerset on the Pier to check-in and collect keys, which is not the most plesant. Then on check-out the receptionist promised us a two extra hours before having to check-out, but right on the scheduled check-in time the keys to the apartment and the building were disabled, so we could not get back into the building. The shower in the en-suite is less than perfect and the bathrooms are extremely cold, with no heating provision, the air conditioning stops working half way through the night, so you wake up freezing in the morning. The mattress is very high and uncomfortable, with a "basin" in the middle; and only a blanket and a sheet provided - not in line with the kind of establishment they advertise.The balcony has no roof over, so it becomes unusable when it rains - unlike the rooms on the other side of the building. The biggest plus this establishment has is the position - right on Salamanca place, with everything [restaurants, shops, galleries] within a few steps' reach. I feel that with a little bit of attention to detail this could be the top place to stay in Hobart.

Our family, two adults and teenager, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Somerset. Located on the Elizabeth Street Pier it has great views of the harbour and is very central. It is an easy walking distance to the Salamanca markets, a supermarket, galleries and Battery Point. It is also central to many sumptuous restaurants, particuarly Blue Skies and Mures. We stayed for three nights initially and then went up the coast. When we returned it felt like we had come home. The kitchen facilities are good, the television is large and the mainly blue decor was calming and modern. The two sleeping spaces worked well as our teenager could have her own space and having two very clean, modern bathrooms worked extremely well. The staff were always very helpful. The only downside is that their is limited parking, but this never caused any major problems. I would highly reccomend the Somerset!

I have stayed at Somerset numerous times and it is absolutely my favourite hotel in Hobart. The hotel is a converter pier warehouse and is modern, airy and an architectural triumph. The apartments are very spacious with a downstairs sitting, dining and cooking area and an upstairs loft style bedroom/s. The views of Salamanca from each room are stunning and tih the yachts and fishing boats bobbing outside your window you feel as if you are on a ship. I would recommend requesting a balcony room as these rooms catch the warm afternoon sun and it is a lovely place to have an afternoon drink or a morning cup of coffee. It's location is second to none being in the centre of salamanca. It's 1 minute walk to short walk to Salamanca Galleries and shops, a couple of minutes to Battery Point and about 5-10minute walk to the restaurants of Elizabeth Street in North Hobart.
