I didn't have any problems with my stay. I am very cautious with best westerns because they are like a box of chocolates. This motel is older, but it does have some qualities. the indoor pool was pleasant. there's also a good restaurant. As others have said the motel is dated somewhat, but I thought the room was very spacious and very economical. There are probably new/nice properties in the adjacent ol' 66 route. but overall I was satisfied with this motel that is older. I don't recall ever hearing a train either so I guess that's a good thing. One other thing to note about gallup. If you are traveling by road....gallup is completely dry on sundays.

Room was nice and large - a King suite with sofa sleeper. Interior room on the pool side so train noise was not a factor. Nice indoor pool, although it was a bit cloudy on the day we were there. The A/C in our room had apparently frooze up, maintanence said it would take several hours to thaw. We did not really want to change rooms since we had unpacked, so he leant us the Managers fan until the AC was working again. Breakfast was good, one of the best buffetts we had on the trip. Bacon, eggs, biscuits gravey, fruit, rolls. This hotel is on the west side of town, west of the airport, so a few miles into center of town.

we chose this motel because of a three star rating in AAA"s travel book. what a disappointment. it should not even be listed. it was dirty, old and in need of total renovation.....including the staff.
and that goes for the restaurant too. they offer a free warm breakfast starting at 6am but when we arrived at 6am, we were told that the chef had not arrived so it would open later.
it was the worse experience of a 6 day car trip from los angeles to chicago and back. it truly gave best western a bad name. we avoided best westerns the remainder of our trip.

Keep in mind that Gallup is a railroad town and most motels are very near the tracks. This BW is about as far away from the tracks as you can get and if you ask for a room in the back you can't hear the RR at all! Rooms were very large and comfortable. I shopped around several motels in the area and these rooms were the best by far. The free breakfast buffet is also the best in town. The place has a large
enclosed pool and sauna. Only negative is the ahllway carpets need replacing. I'll definitely go there again.

My wife and I, on our “southwest adventure”, pulled into the Best Western Inn - Gallup at approximately 1530 hours on November 6, 2006. We were on our back to Phoenix for a return flight to Maryland.
When we arrived, the motel did not appear to be busy, but we had to wait 10 minutes for an employee to acknowledge our presence at the registration desk.
I asked to inspect the room BEFORE accepting it. The electronic lock would NOT work (even the desk clerk could not make it work), but a passing maid showed us the “secret” of operating the worn-out lock. The room (although out-dated and poorly maintained) was acceptable, despite several problems:
• The hair dryer was missing (maintenance told us that the “guests” STOLE everything not nailed down, but did manage to find my wife another hair dryer).
• There was no “shade/cover” on the light fixture in the bathroom. It was missing, leaving two glaring fluorescent tubes over the vanity.
• The toilet seat was worn, did NOT look particularly sanitized, and was loose.
• WORST PROBLEM . . . the room, despite being a “Non-Smoking” room reeked of disgusting cigarette smoke smell! The desk clerk later admitted that the room was recently “converted” from “smoking” to “non-smoking.” (We learned a valuable lesson here . . . BE VERY SPECIFIC when requesting a “non-smoking” room now days.
The PLUS features of the room were:
• It was on the lower floor, the first room inside the door from the parking lot (handicapped space), only a few steps from the (working) ice machine.
• The wireless internet worked perfectly.
• The cable TV operated as promised.
• The beds were comfortable (although the bedspreads smelled of DISGUSTING cigarette smoke).
Since we were tired, and since we would only be spending one night, we accepted the room (because of the above-listed PLUS features) and settled on a price of $59.95 (plus the maddening local taxes of $7.61 . . . gotta feed the local politicians!).
After settling in, we decided to visit the restaurant, “The Gallup Inn Restaurant.” Wish we hadn’t!
My wife ordered a southwest dish, and I requested a cheeseburger, cooked “medium.” For the SECOND TIME on this trip, I was told the LIE . . . “sorry, ‘STATE LAW’ requires us to cook burgers ‘WELL DONE’.”
I informed the server . . . politely, since she was only following orders from some IDIOT in management . . . that there was NO SUCH STATE LAW! Tired of pursuing the issue, I ordered a top sirloin steak, cooked MEDIUM RARE. Since the steak was $17.99, the management was able to cook it the way I wanted it . . . surprise, surprise!
The price of the meal was $42.69 (excluding tip). What a rip-off!
Breakfast was even worse, believe it or not.
• The “scrambled” eggs were watery (obviously made from powdered eggs, military style).
• The orange juice containers were completely empty.
• The young male “host” was reading a newspaper at the reception desk and was completely oblivious to the needs of the serving table.
• One, or more, of the Hispanic employees let their kids run wild (literally) about the restaurant . . . screaming, and handling the food items, the utensils and the pastries. They picked food up with their hands, smelled it, examined it and returned it to the service platters.
This review may be a bit lengthy, but I have tried to cover ALL the reasons to never, EVER, stay in this Best Western facility.
NOTE: The final insult.
We are loyal members of the Best Western Gold Crown Club. This motel STILL HAS NOT posted our “points” . . . surprise, surprise!
Also, the Best Western folks are becoming more and more unwilling to help their members deal with the BW units with which you have to “fight” to get your earned points. Believe me, the “points” are NOT worth the hassle!
Best Western is NOT what it used to be!
