We stayed in bangkok for a few days after spending 10 days at the beach in phuket. Stayed at Lebua last year, but decided to check out other options this time because we were not too thrilled with that place. Also, wanted more space in bangkok because we were coming back from the openness and space of the beach, and were not looking forward to being hemmed in by crowded city life once again.
Somerset Park is a good choice for the interim stopover. Large living room, nice sized well equipped kitchen (which we didn't really use), a dining table, and a decent sized bedroom. the twin beds were a little small (we have boys 3 and 5), but we joined them together and fitted quite comfortably. the balcony door opens which is quite a plus. the only strange thing is the location of the bathroom, which is behind the kitchen, but that's a minor glitch. Oh, and at least in the 1 bedroom apts, there are no bathtubs, but there is a shower room within the bathroom.
Breakfast is adequate but could use a little more variety and imagination. The fare was exactly the same all 4 mornings. However, the room service is quite good and very reasonably priced.
the hotel's staff were all very friendly and helpful, particularly the doormen who got us cabs all the time and advised us on best routes to take depending on time of day. They really were quite exceptional.
the hotel's location is excellent even though it's not in the heart of the shopping district. It is very close to the highway and expressway, so if you're going to chattuchak, safari world, dreamworld, or the crocodile farm, it's much easier to reach them than if you're on sukhumvit or siam square. Also, the hotel runs a free shuttle to the nearest skytrain station, but even with the bangkok traffic it doesn't take more than 20 minutes during rush hour to get to siam paragon/central world. for a family of 4 it's actually generally cheaper to take a taxi than the skytrain.
at night, the area is fairly quiet since it's the heart of the diplomatic/commercial district. But Suan Lum night market (the non-sleazy one) is just 5 minute taxi ride or 15 minute walk away. Also you get really excellent massages at a fantastic spa called Healthland which is just a 5 min drive away. It's where all my local Thai banker friends go when they get off from work, and they're very reasonably priced in a great building. There are convenience stores available just within a 5 minute walk where you can stock up the fridge with the essentials :).
Somerset Park DOES NOT have a kids playroom, although they do claim it on their website. However, there is a nice fishpond and small playground in the garden at the front.
Going out of the hotel, definitely take one of the hotel's namecards with the address written in Thai, as most taxi drivers do not know it. But the street, Soi Suanplu, is very well known (it runs off Sathorn which is one of themain commercial streets) so we would just tell the cab drivers the street name and then point to the somerset when we reached there.
the hotel's pool and gym are reasonable. Clean and not very extensively used. Oh, and there's free broadband in the apartments, but no wifi. They did say they had wifi in the small lobby, but we never tried it because the room connection was ok.
A nice touch was the complimentary munchies in the apartment - a pack of Oreos, ritz crackers, some candy etc. in addition to the usual tea/coffee stuff.
Overall, if you're looking for luxury this is not the place, but if you're looking for spacious, comfortable, well-serviced accommodation in a good location with friendly staff then the Somerset Park Suanplu is a sound choice.

My 4 friends and I stayed here in a 2 bedroom apartment. I booked based on the positive reviews and the excellent price and was not disappointed.
We arrived at 9am and didn't want to pay the extra half day surcharge for early check-in, so we left our bags with the staff and came back in the afternoon some R&R before dinner.
Our apartment was spacious, very modern and comfortable with all the luxuries of a hotel but without the crampness! Our bags were a bit slow to get up to us, and we had to call twice to see where they were. Also, the extra roll-out bed we had booked was not there and it took almost an hour for them to come up. But other than some slightly slow service, the place was excellent and with good amenities and a decent restaurant.
Location is not ideal for the commuters - takes about 15 minutes to walk to the subway and to the Night Bazaar. I'd suggest getting the free shuttle bus to the skytrain - runs once every hour. But I did like it that the hotel is in a very safe location with lots of embassies and businesses close by.
Book in advance if you can. I got my apartment at a discounted price through the hotels website (they do specials for Citibank customers) but you can also book through places like HotelClub.net although they did not have the 2 bedroom apartment I was looking for.
I'd definately return here in future and would recommend it to my friends and family.

This is a great hotel:
- great staff esp the reception desk and the doormen
- clean , spacious and well furnished rooms
- nice pool and grounds
- good ( but rather expensive )spa
- good b'fast
Our family of 4 with 2 pre-schoolers enjoyed our time there. There was something for everyone - spa for me, pool, cable TV and playground for the kids, gym for hubby. Service was truly top class.
On days you don't want to go out, you can order food by phone from a range of great restaurants.
The only setback was the location - a bit far from the main shopping areas and not near ts. But you can easily get a taxi.
You will not regret staying here. We can't wait to go back:)

We stayed in two bedroom unit. The place is quite but nice and clean. Our unit has a minimalist style but it's quite spacious to accommodate five adults and a baby.
The hotel has a shuttle bus service to Sala Daeng skytrain, so it's very convenient. Even when the shuttle bus is not operating, access to public transportation, eg tuk-tuk and taxi, is quite easy.
Nicely located, close to the Lumpini market (Suanlum night market) Silom Centre, and to some of the hip clubs in town.
