"We have stayed at the Best Western for years and used to love it. We stayed in the Luxury Wing because of the larger room with a refrigerator and double sinks. Last August when we checked in it was apparent that management had changed. The people behind the desk acted as if they didn't care. The entire housekeeping crew had changed from the previous year and most looked like they were kids and/or recently released from jail. Often we would return to the room around 5:00 PM and they were still cleaning (if you could call it that). All acted as if they could care less if you liked your room or if you came back--nonchalant to the extreme. We enjoyed this motel for many years but unless something changes we will never stay there again.

This hotel has a luxury wing with renovated rooms that are significantly better than the run of the house rooms. We wound up here by default...nothing else was available in town...Based on previous comments we were not expecting much....but our room had relatively new carpet and comfortable bed....a clean bath...not five star luxury...but a lot better than the 1 ratings given by those who stayed in regular rooms....friendly staff and a good bed...

Wow, I don't know where to begin. My company has always booked me at some nice locations, but this one...this one is a true let down. I was very optimistic as most Best Westerns I've stayed at in the recent past have been decent to rather nice. Not this one, not at all. Where to start.
Walked in to check in. Looked around, and almost walked back out to call my companies travel agency. But I refrained. The gentleman working the counter was wearing a unbutton denim shirt, t-shirt, and jeans. Not a good sign after seeing the old carpet, wood panel walls, and so on upon walking in. He did however surprise me by being very nice and pleasant. After checking in I asked about a breakfast or something. Nope, coffee and that's it. Went to my room. There's a guy in the next room with an open can of gas sitting by my door. Go in my room. Worn out carpet. Faded well used comforters on the beds. Hotter inside then out. A desk the size of a childes desk with no outlets near it, excpet a 2 outlet extension cord (classy!). Turned on the AC which is a wall unit, like you see sticking out the window of a house. As soon as I turned it on, I got a face full of dust and debris, being that it's mounted at about head level. I don't know what else to say. Did I mention I've been here for about 10 minutes and I've found all this wrong? Havn't even unpacked. Sat my laptop down, plugged it into the extension cord, and started this review. Stay away folks.

Expedia listed this motel as a 3-star - I'm hard pressed to say I'd give it one. Our room appeared clean on the surface, but smelled musty. On closer inspection, things like the clock radio and remote were filthy with visible stains. There are bolts in the wall where (perhaps) a couple of paintings use to hang - currentlhe room is devoid of anything that resembles decoration. The decorator lamps consist of decoupage lamps made of wallpaper or fabric with something resembling coffee stains on them. When they say the hairdryer and coffee pot are the amenities - believe them. No extras here. A plastic lighted marquee on the other end of the parking lot announces the "luxury wing," - not what was available through Expedia, apparently.

Coming off the excellent Best Western in Clayton, NM, I was full of goodwill for the chain, but this one in Raton is pretty sad--worn carpeting, random smudges on the wall, musty smell, and no breakfast included in the rate (though if it was on par with the room, I wouldn't have wanted to eat it!). The whole setup was showing its age in a terrible way.
It has an "elite wing" or something like that, but I didn't see any of those rooms--maybe they're better.
Incidentally, my job involves my visiting a lot of motels, and though I didn't get to stay at the Budget Host Melody Lane, I can say it deserves all the praise it gets on this board--and it's almost half the price of the Best Western! I wish they'd had a vacancy the night I was in town.
