Having just returned from the Hotel Santa Caterina in Acireale I would like to make the following observations. The hotel is only a year old, very nicely decorated and extremely clean. The bedrooms are a reasonable size, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space with french doors onto a patio with wonderful views of the sea, the air conditioning was extremely effective and virtually silent The bathroom is excellent apart from the 'gimmicky' shower which was fine once you left the computer alone! The majority of the staff were very friendly and helpful. There was very little information about any of the hotel facilities in the room ie menu's, shower operation etc
Now the bad points: firstly location, sandwiched between a railway line at the back, next to the pool, and a busy motorway/A class road at the front unless you were in your room with the french doors (with excellent double glazing) shut the noise was intrusive, as was the fumes from the vehicles in busy times. Very hilly, not good for unfit people. You definitely need a car to get around but there is limited parking at this hotel. Achireale is noisy, lots of fumes from cars etc , and quite hilly in places. Breakfast at the hotel was abysmal, the worst I have ever been offered. Have had better from 2 & 3* hotels.

Wish we had stayed longer!
So many great things to say about this hotel:
- Only about 1 year old (as of Summer 2007)
- Service was great. Staff very friendly.
- Rooms comfortable - good A/C - good bathrooms, good showers
- Great pool
- Super views from almost every room in the place
- Great food, great service. Dining room is beautifully decorated and has a great terrace
We got lost trying to find the hotel - just a heads up. But I called the hotel and they sent a staff member out to find us which was great. The location is on the main coastal road that connect Taormina and Catania - only a few minutes from the freeway. A great spot to launch daytrips to Taormina, Etna, Roman Villa, Siracusa, etc. Not on the beach of course (since that side of the island has a pretty steep coastline) but the pool is great. Train runs right behind the hotel but is not a distraction. Also can walk into the old town of Acireale quite easily to grab necessary grocery items, etc. Rooms quite comfortable - beds very firm but we all slept very well. We stayed 3 nights before heading to the opposite side of Sicily and we cherished our nights at the Santa Caterina! A great value for the price - definitely 5-star quality at 4 (or even 3) star price.

Just returned from a weekend trip to Sicily with my eight year old son.
I know the area and searched for a accomodation good to reach by car and not in the city centre of Catania or in expensive Taormina.
Acireale is located about 20 minutes from Catania airport, take
exit "Acireale" continue to SS114, a right turn towards Catania
and after five minutes there is a assigned small exit directly to the hotel.
One side the SS114, on the other the railroad. What about to sleep here?.
No problem, sound-proofed windows, had a good sleep there.
Another 20 minutes to Taormina, the Ätna Vulcano is directly to reach from Acireale via Zafferana, so a real good location.
Staff was friendly and helpful, I asked for another room than advised with a better view to the sea, no problem.
Bathroom was spacious, shower only, but large italian style
with tiles. Wodden floor in the room and a balcony.
Buffet style breakfast was ok. I like the small italian bread rolls.
No problem to store our bags till we´re back down from the Ätna at check-out.
Another recommendable place to go in my list.
