Great Bar, Great Location, Bad Hotel

Stayed in the Hudson for two nights and while I am a fan of modern hotels the Hudson has some serious problems.
Firstly, the bar and nightclub are great. The bar serves some amazing cocktails and the staff there were great.
The problem is the hotel itself. Our room was very dark and because it is an old building the only window in our room was around 9ft from the ground making it hard to even open the blinds let alone the window. The room was very hot and it doesn't have aircon which is a disgrace in any modern hotel. What was strange was the weather was not that hot but the room was. All they had was a small fan that was noisy as hell. It actually kept us awake.
Also the shower was weird as it was a hand held nozzle that we couldn't put up to operate as a normal shower so we had hand held showers. One thing that was good was the water pressure. These issues made staying in the room uncomfortable.
On checking out the Australian on the front desk had a serious attitude problem. She had an issue as supposedly she got drafted in to work at the last moment but this should not have allowed her to take out her grievances on paying customers. She actually refused to let us store our bags as she said their storage area was full.
Maybe we got a bad room but while the location is good and the bar is great the hotel is not what you would expect from a 4 star.

We stayed at the Hudson Hotel for one night at the beginning of May in an Executive Room.
The room was nice, relatively spacious although very dark. But the bed was big and comfy. The hotel is bang in the centre of town at the West End so location is ideal.
In some ways it shouldn't describe itself as a hotel as it really is a bar / nightclub with rooms above it. There's no restaurant or residents bar just the busy main bar which was stylish but pretty soulless.
What really let the place down for us was the general indifference of all the staff. I wouldn't say they were rude, just not really interested. I wonder about places like this alot - by just spending a bit of time on customer service and other small things they'd be great but instead they focus on how the place looks on the surface and when you scratch that surface you find very little.
I wouldn't recommend this place to people unless you're looking for a night out in edinburgh and nothing much else.

Disappointed with the Hudson Hotel

Just returned from HudsonHotel with a group of friends. Hotel is in a great location, handy for walking (or short taxi ride) to all attractions. Modern room but absolutely not worth ?140 per night (PLUS breakfast). Lighting in room was very poor and not at all practical. No ventilation in the room (which was very warm) or the bathroom. Staff were at best nonchalant and at worst down right rude. Very amateurish eg, unaware of a run in Edinburgh this morning which had a significant impact on the roads. Four of our party were stuck in the lift for 40 mins very early this morning. The two night porters were not at all bothered and took no action. The duty manager was somewhat more concerned but we had to approach him for updates. Hotel did offer two bottles of bubbly by means of apology but I think some reassurance to my friends whilst stuck in the lift would have meant much more.
This hotel is located in a city centre so a bit of noise is expected. Although we couldn't hear the noise from the night-club beneath, we could certainly hear the revellers, particularly the singers and arguing couples. We also heard the binmen and early morning (as in still dark) bottle delivery. All part of life in a hotel but had there been air conditioning, we wouldn't have had to leave the windows open all night and could have cut out some disturbance.
I am struggling to understand why this is rated a 4 star establishment. It is however 3 stars. Hotel is promoted as a "boutique" hotel a label which, I feel, hotels use to justify hyped up prices for what is essentially just trendy (ish) decor. I have stayed in several well known chain hotels which have offered equivalent levels of comfort for ?40 per night.
Good things about the hotel; absolutely the location, lively bar and bar prices, nice looking rooms. Not so good things; price,
cleanliness of stairways, lift, staff, practicality of room facilities, tea and coffee making facilities i.e., kettle flex isn't long enough to place on table and has to be placed on the floor, choice of Nescafe coffee or basic quality tea (no speciality teas), noise from outside, lack of ventilation, tiny rooms.
My advice. If you want a great location and don't mind paying inflated prices for standard accommodation, this is a great option for you (although personally I would now opt for somewhere like The Bonham or Roxburgh, both MUCH more discerning - have stayed at both). If you want a great location and good rates then go for a room in one of the chain hotels, maybe along the Royal Mile. This is also not a hotel which would be very suitable for families.
Nice, stylish, friendly

We booked the "Executive double" for two nights on Easter weekend. It had a comfortable king-size bed, a sofa bed, coffee machine, small fruit baskets and chocolates. The bathroom had a large, modern tub. There was a large, flat-screen TV on the wall opposite the bed.
We were very pleased with our stay at the Hudson. We even got a discount at the bar and club in the hotel. I would recommend it to travelers.
Hotel good, location good... would return.

From the moment we checked in I was more than happy with my choice of this hotel. The receptionist noting that we were stopping for 3 nights said I will upgrade you to a bigger room. Whether this is a good marketting ploy I don't know but I bought it!
Our room (201) overlooked the front of the hotel. The room was excellent with everything we could have wanted. It was spotlessly clean, warm and above all else cosy.
The Hudson is located literally just off Princes Street. From the airport it was a 25 minute bus ride (?5 return) and 2 minutes from the West End bus stop.
The road immediately outside of the hotel is currently closed so traffic noise was minimal however if and when the road re-opens I suspect it could be a different matter.
I cannot pass comment on the food at the hotel as we actually never ate there once but for accomodation and location it gets my vote. I would certainly stay there again.
There are a plethora of restaurants in Edinburgh with many being located close to the hotel. We found two that were very good, Gusto (Italian) in George Street and also Wildfire (Steak & Seafood) in Rose Street.
Gusto is a large restaurant with a tangible buzz atmosphere where as Wildfire is a quieter more intimate restaurant. I would certainly have no qualms in recommending them.
Would also recommend All Bar One in George Street. Yes its part of a chain but the beer and the food is good and reasonably priced.
There is a whole host of things to do in Edinburgh the Castle being the most obvious. The walk along the Royal Mile from Holyrood to the Castle is worth doing.
We also took the bus to Leith and visited the Royal Yacht Brittania which was fascinating and very reasonably priced. Well worth the visit.
As a fan of "real ale" I have to recommend the Guildford pub just of the east end of Princes Street. I chanced upon this pub and they were offering a choice of 10 different real ales. Those I tried were excellent and well kept and this place was an oasis amongst a number of other hostelries.
In precise - hotel good, location good, easily accesible by air and rail and Edinburgh is a great place to visit.
