Posada del Peine has a great location off the touristy Plaza Mayor.
Restaurants, shops, and more are within a few feet of the
hotel doorway in a safe-looking locale.
Peine Posada features the modern style and helpful staff that seem to be trademarks of the Petit Palace group of hotels. Our room was clean, of adequate size, and comfortable.
However, the hotel could be improved along several dimensions -- for example, it has room safes that require credit card swipes to activate and at least one staff member apparently overlooking a 'do not disturb' sign. Finally, Peine Posada feels slightly cramped, particularly in its lobby and elevators.

We spent three nights at this hotel, arriving on New Year's Eve, and absoultely loved it! The hotel decor is gorgeously cosy but modern and the exterior is so colourful. The hotel is situated in a pretty cobblestoned street, walking distance from Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. The location is fantastic (espcially on New Year's eve - being able to walk to the celebrations).
When we entered our room we were greeted with a mini bottle of champagne and some delicious almond Spanish sweets to welcome in the new year. An unexpected and very thoughtful touch.
The room was spotless, comfortable and had a great shower. Breakfast was delicious!!
We would definitely stay here again!!
NB - Just make sure you check the cost of any overseas & local landline calls you may wish to make from the room!! We were caught out. We knew to expect the calls to be expensive but the price was outrageous!!

Booked through LastMinute.com on Monday morning, arrived Tuesday lunchtime for 3 nights. Reservation ready. Very friendly staff, clean room with great shower/en-suite and laptop with internet connection, security safe in room. We had a small room (but big enough for our requirements as we were out most of the time) on top floor with view of internal courtyard walls, but SO quiet even with open window, it was bliss. Fabulous position almost in Plaza Mayor and convenient for just about everything. We saw other Petit Palace hotels in town but all in much noisier venues. Would go there again.

Coming into Madrid after 3 weeks in Catalunya, we checked brand new Lonely Planet for a last-minute recommendation. This hotel was "Author's Choice", though it turned out to be 50% more expensive than listed. Well located it is, but so are many, many other lodgings. The young staff were cheerful. However, our 150 Euro room matched other reviewers comments: one third a bathroom, cramping our ability to move around the bed. Messy no-drain sink, no soap dish. Cheesy hand-painted art on the wall, a truly minimal effort. None of the lights on one side of the bed worked, nor were repaired after comment. It took two requests to get an extra blanket brought to the room. No bathrobes. Over-priced breakfast in a windowless basement room...what a way to start the day! It was pouring rain...no umbrellas. This is 4 star? Skip this one, folks, unless nothing else available. We moved to a hostal within a block: comfortable, half the price, incredibly friendly service.

My husband and I travelled to Spain for the first time last month with our three month old baby. We stayed at Petit Palace Posada del Peine in Madrid for several days and had a very good experience there. We found it to be a very nice, personal boutique hotel.
The location just off Plaza Mayor is a great home base for exploring old Madrid on foot, and is just a couple of blocks from the Sol subway station, though we took the subway only to get from the airport to the hotel (probably a mistake as the Madrid subway system is not very baby stroller freindly -- we had to contend with lots of stairs, though I should note that the local people were very kind and people did stop to assist us several times). The hotel is in a very old building (as evidenced by exposed beams in the stairwell), but is attractively decorated in a funky contemporary urban style. There is a tiny European style elevator and only one step to get in the front door, which was great when using the baby stroller. The room itself was quite small (not really a huge concern for us), but it had good amenities such as a really nice shower, and a laptop computer with internet access. There was also free juice and coffee available in the lobby in the evenings, which was a nice detail. Our room faced into an inner courtyard, so while we had no view at all, we also had none of the street noise issues our guidebook had warned about.
The front desk staff were young and friendly, and all had at least some ability to speak English. A few spoke excellent English. The girls made a great fuss over our baby every time we came and went, and made us feel very welcome. They also were very accomodating in allowing us to use their microwave to sterilize our baby's bottles. The hotel was always immaculately clean. All in all a very good experience for the money and we would not hesitate to stay there again.
