They wouldn't let my Brasilian friend visit me at the hotel.

Everything was fine until they wouldn't let my friend enter the hotel because he was a Brasilian and of color. They let my brother and other friends in without any trouble. It was totally embarrassing and the most racist thing I have ever experienced. I told them that he has been my friend for 6 years and I trust him with my life but their response was "We can not let him enter your room because of security issues". I told them my other friends have entered with no problem and they repeated the same thing. I realize that Rio has problems but I insured them that I have known him for ever and they still refused.
totally disgusted

I stayed here for a 7 day vacation to Rio. I'd rank it a 2.5 star hotel. The location is fantastic, it's situated right across the street from the beach in Copacabana. They serve complimentary breakfast and while you eat, you look directly out into the ocean view.
Our room was decent. Two twin sized beds, a small tv, a moderately sized closet. I never know how to review foreign bathrooms since I always end up measuring them against US hotel bathrooms. I didn't like the bathroom, the shower wasn't enclosed and water would get everywhere. The towels were a little dingy and the staff didn't do a really good job refilling items.
Also, for women who have thick hair like me, you should be aware that the a/c only blows into the room proper and doesn't come in thru vents so the bathroom gets HOT and stuffy and your hair will poof up in the Rio weather.
Our window overlooked what looked like a tenement and we could hear kitchen type of noises. I did get a peek at the ocean view rooms and they looked much nicer.
The staff was hit or miss. Several front desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful, but others were pretty indifferent.
If you're not overly picky about your hotel and will only use it to sleep, I'd rec'd the Olinda Othon. The famous Hotel Copacabana is right down the street.

I chose this hotel because I got a cheap rate (US$165) during new year time. However, when I showed up, my booking was cancelled and I have to pay US$500 a night to stay in the ocean facing room. (The booking mess-up is not the hotel's fault so I won't go into details). The room was decent with large closet and clean bathroom. The problem is the street noice from the 8-lane Av. Atlantico right next to the ocean, which is pretty much non-stop 24-hour and the old style window can't block out the street noise at night.
Staff is attentive but struggles with English sometimes. Elevator can be slow sometimes. The location is good for Copacabana and subway station (a few minutes walk away). If not during the crazy time of New Year or Carnaval, it is wiser to pay a bit more and stay around Posto 6 or Ipanema.

We just came back from Rio. The trip was organized by Traveland agency.
The hotel is far away from 4 stars, probably 2.5. It’s old and crappy. 90% of the rooms are facing the back of the hotel and you would not see the light! Do not stay on the last floor, the air conditioner is on the top of your room and the vibration and noise will kill you!! We’ve changed three rooms and one was worse than another. Please spend a little more and book the normal hotel
