The minimum rate is One star? This Hotel doesnt even deserve that. The diffrence from the Website Photos and the REALITY is SOO far is scary and I Urge ANY couples looking to stay here for the HORRIFIC price Not to.
Use the New York Hostel - with Superior location and you wont be sick when you walk down the damp sweaty dark corridor to you box cell.
I Cant stress enough How glad we were to get out of there and stay at the Fantastic Marrakech - just a few doors down for ?30 less a night??? There is No comparison.
Dont chance the hotel and hope you get a good experience, you wont. STAY AWAY

For starters there was no AC, not even a fan! The bathrooms were broke half the time, hot water was not working the other half of the time. The room was filthy, the linens were filthy , with stains and hair. The door had duck tape to cover the two inch gaping hole at the top of the door. And over all the motel was in very poor condition. Although We felt fairly safe there , I wouldn't stay again.

Booked online for a weekend trip to NYC to look for apartments before a cross-country move. It was listed as a two star hotel so we weren't expecting anything fancy, just a place to sleep at night after looking at apartments all day long. The location was perfect for our apartment hunting, but that turned out to be the only thing that was perfect.
The lobby needs a little TLC but is gorgeous. Don't believe it. It's the only part of the hotel that looks remotely good. The rest of the building looks and feels like something out of a 70's era ghetto crime movie, with tiny rooms, cramped hallways, and decaying walls/carpets/ceilings/floors/plumbing...
The first room we got smelled like something had died inside, and there was no light. After inching down a completely black hallway and turning a corner, I could vaguely make out a wire hanging from the only light fixture. Hoping it wasn't about to electrocute me, I grabbed it and pulled. I should have left the room dark. It was barely big enough to fit the bed and looked as bad as it smelled. No way were we staying in that room.
To their credit, the hotel did give us a different room without any hassle. Maybe they're used to complaints about that room. The new room smelled fine, but didn't look any better, nor was it any bigger. The bed was uncomfortable and the sheets/blankets were of questionable cleanliness. The shared bathroom down the hall wasn't any better - bring sandals if you book here against the advice of all the reviews. Fortunately the weather was nice while we were there, I can only imagine how uncomfortable the hotel would be in the dead of winter or during a heat wave.
I suppose it could have been a lot worse. We didn't encounter any bedbugs, cockroaches, or mice, and we were only looking for a place to sleep and bathe. Still, I've stayed in budget hotels/hostels/pensions in 3rd world countries that were far, far better than this dump. I could accept this kind of quality for maybe $10/night, but $100? Not worth it in the slightest.

My husband and I were looking for an inexpensive place to stay for one night in NYC, we should have splurged a bit more. I booked in advance and we called 30 min. before we were going to check in, just to make sure. They were expecting us, until we arrived. The guy looked at us, took our reservation paperwork, and called another hotel to see if they had any available rooms. They didn't. So he said he had one room available w/side by side twins (we booked a double). When we asked why we couldn't have the room we booked, he just got agitated and basically said take it or leave it. We reluctantly took it, for fear of not knowing where else to go. Once we got to our room on the 5th floor, by way of an old rickety elevator, we opened the door to a tiny room with BUNK BEDS! We were not expecting to sleep in separate beds, but bunk beds was a little much. (this was the only weekend away w/o our two year old). The room was dingy and dirty, the bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in quite awhile, and everything smelled like smoke. The pillows felt more like a t-shirt wadded up inside a pillow case than a pillow. When we tried to call the elevator, it only came to the 4th floor, and took us to the basement instead of the 1st. We didn't ride it again. I considered staying up all night around NYC instead of sleeping in this hotel. The only good quality about this place is that we had hot showers. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I've stayed in hostels before that were much nicer and cleaner than this.

Stayed here with my brother and a mutual friend for three nights between Christmas and New Years in December 2005. We choose this place because we wanted cheap and we didn't want to commute in from-say Newark. Outside the place looks charming. the lobby looks nice, but you can tell (from the layers of dust on the chandeliers for instance) that this hotel had seen grander days. It then goes down hill VERY FAST!
We took the rickety old elevator, which creeped ever so slowly, to our floor (we never took it again after that). The floor was dark and dingy, with uneven floors. My brother commented that he expected to see "Mimi" from the play "Rent" wandering around the hallway, asking us to light her candle (if you saw the play or the movie, you get the idea).
Our unit had one large room, with a queen size bed and an armoire containing a TV within. An adjoining smaller room had a bunkbed and a small table. The mattress of the queen sized bed was...well...gross. It was lumpy and felt like it was torn in spots (none of us were brave enough to investigate further) and the pillows were like cement bags. It was decided (by my brother and our friend) that since I was the biggest of the three, I should have the "benefit" of sleeping in the queen sized bed (I tried not to think about it, lest I wouldn't have gotten any sleep). On the lower bunk, our friend found what appeared to be pubic hair in the sheets. She ended up sleeping on the sheets in her sleeping bag which she brought along.
For a while we actually thought we were the only ones in the hotel as there wasn't a soul to be found the first day or night (mind you we didn't spend much time in the hotel). That was until early the next morning. As there are no phones in the room, the hotel staff provides a wake-up bang on your (hulking, metal) door. We asked for a bang at 8 AM, but got one (or so we thought) at 6:30 and again at 7:15. Turns out the bangs were for our neighbours but it sure sounded like it was for us (keep in mind, we thus far think we are the only ones there). When it was time to use the bathroom & shower, that's when we discovered that there were in fact many people staying at this hotel and we would have to wait for 8 others before us. I snuck up several floors and found an unoccupied bathroom but the water pressure was very low and the water got cold quickly.
One other surprise was the radiator. As others have mentioned, it hisses like anythign and it scared the heck out of us when it first went off. We thought it was going to explode. An additional problem is that the room got so hot, we had to sleep with the window open in December to keep it a reasonable temperature.
Some have pointed out that this is a hostel and not a hotel. True, but I have stayed in many, many hostels. Good ones, bad ones and this one certainly leans towards the bad. Don't trust the photos they have on their website (or on hotels.com) the rooms look NOTHING like that. This place is creepy & dingy, however it served our purpose, which was a cheap (rather it was cheaper, as no place in Manhattan is cheap) place to stay for a short trip to NYC. The next time I'm in NYC, I'll look for some place else, even if I do decide to stay in a hostel.
