Construction and laundry costs provide a bit of a sting

We stayed here late last year and were thrilled to arrive in Krakow amidst a blanket of fresh white snow.
Unfortunately, our enthusiasm decreased as we made our way to the Chopin Hotel, laden with luggage, and through a huge building site in the dark. There was a huge amount of construction taking place around the hotel - something we had no idea about - and we had to cross a freeway and trudge through snow and mud in the un-lit site to get to the hotel. This proved to be a major problem for the entirity of our stay.
Anyway, once we got up to our room it was nice enough, although very basic and that was what we were expecting for the price. We desperately needed to do some laundry so enquired about this with the front desk. The guy there told us to simply bring it down. We were told this laundry would not be ready for us for two days so we only put in half what we needed done, preferring to wash the rest in the bathroom ourselves to have ready for the next day. We looked around the room for a standard laundry bag to put our laundry in and give to the front desk but located none. We asked the guy downstairs once again and he said the regular shopping bag we had used was fine, so we assumed no hotel-issue bag was necessary. We also assumed that, like at most other budget hotels, our laundry would simply be put into the hotel's washing machines with the sheets etc.
It turned out we were wrong ... and that it was a good thing we included only half of we needed washed. When two days later our laundry returned (we had to ask the front desk about it, they didn't call to notify us) the girl on the front desk told us off for not having used the correct laundry bag. When we explained that we looked but couldn't find one and had been told by staff that a regular plastic bag was okay, she offered no apology but told us no, that would not do as all the laundry was sent out to drycleaners and had to be marked off on the bag. This means we were charged dry-cleaning rates per item. She calculated teh fee, which amounted to well over fifty euros! For a bag of laundry! Who on earth spends that in a budget hotel? And who dry cleans socks?
We were shocked and explained to the girl that had we known our laundry would be sent out for expensive dry cleaning, we never would have arranged it. We felt as though we'd been misled. She admitted she thought this very expensive, but said there was nothing she could do and shifted all blame onto the guy who had served us the night before. The fact was there was no laundry bag in the room when there should have been one, and had we found one, we would have been aware of the prices. Failing that, we should have been informed that we required the correct hotel-issue laundry bag, that there was a per-item charge, and that the laundry would be dry-cleaned, not washed regularly.
This experience really soured a well-planned and well-budgeted stay in lovely Krakow. It may seem like a small thing, but it was enough to ensure we won't return to the Chopin Hotel.

Stayed at the Chopin for 4 nts at the end of March. Arrived earlier than expected and did not expect to get into our room, but it was ready which meant we got a little longer to enjoy the bar facilities and an afternoon in the city. The hotel room was basic but very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bar area was pleasant with efficient staff. The breakfasts were typical continental, hot and cold, but plentiful and always well stocked.
There is some building work going on in the area and it does start early in the morning but we found if the windows are kept shut it kept the noise out.
The walk into the town centre is about 15 mins along a busy road. The pubs and restaurants in the centre vary in price and quality but all in are good value for money.
No complaints at all about the hotel, it is ideal for a short, cheap break. Would definately recommend it.

Stayed for 4 nights in April 2008. Nice little hotel, a bit out of town (around 15 minute walk to centre) and situated on a busy roundabout although the newish subway system is fine. There are bus and tram routes from outside the hotel if walking is a problem.
Stayed in a superior room which although was quite small was fine, sky news was the only English channel available, but that's not what you go on holiday for!!
Breakfast is good with a selection for just about everyone. Restaurant is good with nice food, and the bar is nice for an evening drink (barman is friendly which is a rarity in Krakow).
Recommended and good value for money if booked over internet.
