Like eating in a museum

Although we didn't stay at the Drumossie we recently dined there for a special occasion.
The food was excellent and the staff attentive, all as we'd expect from a top notch hotel such as this.
The disappointment was the restaurant itself, it's like a cross between a museum and a morge. It's dark and dingy, with dark wallpaper, heavy old fasioned dark curtains and stuffy old pictures with heavy gold frames on the walls. The evening we visited the sun was shinning outside which just exagerated our dreary surroundings.
The rest of the hotel is clean, bright and modern, we've attended functions at the Drumossie before and they've been of exceptional standard, so why is the restaurant so awful. It's like somehting out of the 1960's!!!!
very nice hotel

This place changed its name to the New Drumossie a few years ago after having a major refurbishment. I spent one night here in April 2008, and found everything about it extremely pleasant - the grounds, the public areas, the room (210), and the bathroom. The room and bathroom were both large. The room seemed to have everything one could possibly need, though some things were well concealed - someone had to tell me where the hair-drier was. Everything was very clean, and the food was fine.
Many of the staff seemed to be from Eastern Europe, and so I didn’t understand everything that they said first time round, and vice versa. The local staff that I spoke to were excellent.
One thing struck me as strange. The bed in my room had 2 single mattresses on a large base. As I was a single occupant, one of the mattresses had been made up, so that I was effectively sleeping in a single bed.
For some reason, I didn’t sleep well, and woke at 5.00 a.m. and couldn’t get back to sleep. No doubt it was not the hotel’s fault, but it did leave me wondering whether I would choose to stay here again - hence four out of
five instead of full marks.
Not trustworthy

My business meetings etc. can be up to 6 times zones away and never enough time to avoid jet lag during them, "Oh well". So this meeting is just up the road (100 miles, 160 km) in Inverness, "great". I'll book a room at the meeting place straight away, to arrive the night before and leave the night after, that's 82 days before the meeting, "no jet lag". They confirm my room straight away, but warn if I cancel after 14:00 on the day before, I'll forfeit the money paid. Also if I book online I'll get a bottle of wine in my room too, "nice". On the day before the meeting, I planned to drive at the hotel after lunch, but no, there's an email posted 20:55 the previous evening, from 'reservations@drumossiehotel.co.uk' saying they no longer have a room for me and as a consequence, they have 'out-booked' me to another hotel, "hmmm not very amused". This hotel turns out to be 20 miles (32 Km) away and no mention of rates or web site but only an address and a phone number. This is not a lot of good really, I might as well do it from home because there's not a hotel room to be had in Inverness (there's an STUC conference going on in the area, with Gordon [the PM] as the key note speaker). I phoned the hotel and got a girl who knew not what to do, but took my details and promised a call back soon from someone who did. A couple of hours later I sent an email saying don't make any reservations elswhere for me. Another three hours later I was called and the conclusion was that rooms were available on the evening of the meeting (the STUC has now finished) , so I booked one and yes I (or rather my company) would get a discount and I'd still be a bottle of wine. On the day it's up early and drive to the hotel, "I'll be tired later" but at least I haven't got to drive back on the same day. When I arrived I was taken to my room, although I said this was not necessary and was there was a bottle of wine, no "I'll look into it", I was told. The room was a nice size and very pleasant, although the usual problem of a short bed length.
The conference room and indeed the hotel is spacious, clean and modern. If I had known at the beginning at the bottled water and glasses were all you were going to get for the rest of the day, I'd have kept mine handy to save me washing one up in the toilet. The food, considering it was catering for around 70 was OK, but not a lot of it. "I'm a growing boy you know". The staff were all well turned out and pleasant.
At check time I was asked by the girl in reception (she sounded like the girl I spoke with the day before), if I'd enjoyed my stay, "No" I said and her reaction was a succinct "Oh". No the wine never did turn up, but my company got a 40% discount assuming the room I had was the one I booked.
So if you're going to a conference there, have a good breakfast before you go and keep a hold of your water glass. If you're planning to stay there, check to see if there are any other conferences in town and be prepared to stay somewhere else if there are. Finally, don't believe the free bottle of wine incentive on their web site.

I seem to have spent most of March this year in hotels in Inverness!!!
Checked into the new Drummossie Hotel last week for two nights as part of another large group and I have to say it was fantastic.
Checkin was quick, efficient and hassle free. We were directed to the lifts with our luggage but we later found the closer stairwell which led us directly to our room on the first floor.
Our room was large and had twin beds which were very close together but this can soon be altered by moving the bedside cabinets which are not fixed and moving the beds slightly. There are comfortable chairs in each room, television, tea service tray including cafetiere and filter coffees and lush biscuits.
There is no drawer space in the room at all but there is a large wardrobe with sliding doors which also has a shelving area within for the items you would normally put in drawers. There are two large wine glasses, whisky glasses, and proper glasses in the bathrooms unlike some hotels now.
On arrival every room has a decanter and whisky which is free of charge for the enjoyment of guests. We found this to be a lovely touch and totally unexpected. Turn down service at night also has a bottle of whisky so they can give you a top up if required.
Meals were lovely, self service cold buffet and also a hot buffet breakfast menu. Both evening meals were nice although it seems that everything I don't like or am allergic to was on the menu both nights so I settled for the vegetarian option which was fantastic.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone to stay in and would love to return here, the only downside is it is quite far out of the town and any person staying here really needs to have the use of a car, or plenty money for a taxi!!!
