The Namba Oriental is a great place... the rooms are meduim size and modern..its a great Hotel to stay at if you arrive at Kansai airport.. a quick 30 minute Rapit train.. and your at Namba... the airport train is down at the end of the shopping arcade you have to walk up the arcade.. and take that 21 exit... remember theres afew levels of this arcade which stuffed us up... just remember to say sumimasen. Namba oriental hotelo wa doko des ka?. and some friendly person will point the way... its a very bloody hard hotel to find... and be sure to ask for a non smoking room, if you dont smoke that is...
Cheers...

good location, decent price, no non-smoking room available

We booked the Namba Oriental because it was centrally located and had a decent price, especially for downtown Osaka. The room was fine except that we wanted a non-smoking room and were given a smoking room. Also the hotel was a bit hard to find on arrival as you have to walk through a shopping center to find the entrance, and the reception desk is on the third floor.
Great location

Just got back from a 2 week trip to Japan. The Oriental was one of the better hotels we stayed in (across 6 cities).
Great location - right in the heart of the Namba area. Beware if you like Japanese kitchen accessories as there is Osaka's big restaurant supply section of the market very close by. Also a great bookstore with English books. And many, many restaurants. Easy walk to hundreds of shops and Shinbashi shopping area.
I had no problem with the security - Japan is not exactly a dangerous place.
The room was average size for a Japanese hotel, the bed was nice and the pillows good (this, I have found, is a real problem in Japan!).
Disappointing

We stayed at this hotel Jan 08. The hotel was clean but the decor tired. Having stayed in business hotels in the Namba area on previous visits to Japan I feel they represent better value and I preferred what they offer.
There is no two ways about it the lobby area smells strongly of smoke as do the lifts. If this bothers you it probably isn't the place for you.
The security gate is necessary as the hotel lobby opens onto cafes and restaurants and the lift is shared with the slots machine place in the basement. We felt this gave an impression that the hotel was concerned about the people frequenting the area round about, which was disconcerting. We have stayed in the 'red light' area of Toyko and were less concerned there.
The room we stayed in was certainly not sound proof (maybe just our luck) and we could hear normal conversations from the rooms next door as well as being wakened by a couple nearby having a 'good time' at 1:30am.
There is an internet point in the rooms (if you take your laptop with you) but no computer access otherwise, which was less than what's offered at business hotels.
The long and short is that this hotel fell short of expectations and as a result we cut our stay short and moved on sooner than we had planned. I would not stay here again.
