Based on Trip Advisor reviews we booked this hotel for a two night stay in Kyoto. The hotel itself is great. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful, and speak very good English. The room had two full size beds, a couch, and free internet. We got room service dinner the night we arrived and it was excellent.
Breakfast wasn't included in our hotel room but we paid for it one day. It was so-so. Not much western food that was good. The scrambled eggs were powdered, bacon was limp and fatty. I ended up just having croissants and a bowl of cereal and fruit. Those were fine.
My only complaint is the location. It sits between two subway stations and either are a 10 minute walk or so. It's located in the middle of a residential block so it's not easy to find. We had to make a conscious effort to find it every time we walked from the metro.
Our first choice was the Hotel Grandvia Kyoto. This hotel is right at the central Kyoto Station (Shinkansen, JR, and busses). This would have been a great hub for our touristy activities in Kyoto. Unfortunately the hotel wasn't available when we wanted to be in Kyoto.

We (family of 3; 6yr old) spent 5 nights here in April. It wasn't our first choice and we weren't sure about the location but in fact we loved the place and the location in a well-heeled district near the Imperial Palace grew on us over time. We often stopped off at an earlier metro station and walked back through the park as the cherry blossom was out and the weather good.
The hotel has a slight feel of faded granduer (beige marble) about it but actually it's slick and modern with all the usual facilities you'd expect of a 4/5 star.
The room was spacious (2 large beds and a sofa area) and well appointed and the service exemplary. We ate one night in the French restaurant in the foyer which was good but we had better food and dining experiences in the local restaurants. You need to look hard for these as they are tucked away and you only spot them at night.
The service was superb and all the staff were very courteous and attentive to our needs. No faults at all there.
It's about a 5-10 min walk from the subway and about 40 mins through the Imperial park and some to get to the main shopping drag. Most things in Kyoto are well spaced so for me the location of the Brighton wasn't a negative despite initial fears to the contrary.

Colorful, quiet, efficient, modern, a fine example of Japanese hospitality. The property is a taxi ride from anywhere in town, as the neighborhood is not interesting, but for all that, it's an elegant choice in Kyoto.
