We originally booked in for one night to stay at the cottage. It was just after New Years day and the whole place was still festive. On arrival we were shown around the hotel and then taken to the cottage which is in the village.
I have stayed in a number of suites over the years in top hotels around the world but this took some beating. As we entered a christmas tree greeted us and the whole place had a gentle smell of woodsmoke from the log fire in the lounge. The whole place was "English Village" personified. In addition spacious throughout, hi tech toys where needed (but an old bakerlight telephone to keep the image where not), an amazing bathroom with huge copper bath and what must be the worlds biggest balcony - a walled cottage garden exclusive to the cottage, with croquet lawn,
The hotel collected us for diner to save the walk (it was wet and windy) though a summer stroll to the hotel would be pleasant later in the year. Dinner was good and the main hotel atmosphere great - some seem to complain about the decor - it's English Manor House, not chain 5*, so keep that in mnd.
The whole thing was so good I cancelled my next days meetings and we stayed an extra night. That night we cooked ourselves - the kitchen is better equipped than most people's home kitchens!.
We can't fault this hotel, it's staff and the cottage.

We stayed here for the weekend a few weeks ago after visiting the hotel once before for dinner. Here are our thoughts...
Staff - so helpful and friendly - they could not do enough for us or be more accomodating during our stay. Not one member of staff let the place down and probably the best 'team' we have ever encountered at a hotel.
Hotel grounds - very very pretty. Went on a lovely long walk and saw some gorgeous views. The gardens at the side of the house are not quite so pretty but then again it is winter so maybe they look better in summer?
Inside the Hotel - it is very much of the 'shabby chic' style. Old country house with antique looking furniture and oil paintings. Whilst we love the old country house feel we felt in places it needed some tlc as it looked a bit shabby. The carpets in the lounge and bar have frayed and treadbare patches in places and the paintwork looked tired and chipped. In the toilet by the restaurant the paper was peeling off the peach walls and it looked very old and tatty - not what you expect in a hotel of this standard. I'm sure it wouldn't cost much to replace and carpet and touch up the paint - it really is in need of this - we felt like it let the place down a bit.
Bedroom - again the paintwork was tired, bubbles in the ceiling wallpaper and parts where it was coming away from the ceiling (maybe due to a old leak?). Patched up carpet that didn't match the rest of the room as it was a different shade and a dark mark where it joined, let down a room which was supposed to be one of the more expensive there. Other than that it was very comfortable, great bed, lovely bathroom.
Food - very nice although my starter and main course were look warm and would have been much nicer if delivered to me hot.
All in all a great country hotel but really let down by the tatty and old quality of the paintwork and carpet in some areas. If this was redone (it really is only in a few rooms so it wouldn't cost much and given you are paying a lot to stay there I think the rooms should be in tip top condition) then it would be a gorgeous hotel and fit for the staff working there.

We recently stayed at the Cottage at Coombe House for a mini-moon after our wedding in Devon. After such a 'high' weekend it would have been easy for even the best of locations to be a let down, but Coombe House was perfect.
Its a beautiful setting, very peaceful, even more so in the Cottage which was quite away from the main hotel and very private.
The staff were excellent, very welcoming and accomodating. The restaurant on the first night was delicious, as was the breakfast hamper the next morning (at our request, you can have breakfast in the main hotel). Even better was the casserole and wine brought down for our meal at the cottage on the second night when we didn't feel like going up to the main hotel, fantastic!
The cottage has the biggest copper bath I've ever seen, very luxurious! Also, has the largest Aga I've ever seen not that we attempted any cooking!!
Highly recommended.

After driving for 6 hours from Leeds - yes, spent time in the M6 carpark outside Birmingham.... it was lovely to arrive to wonderful smiling faces - and cold beer served by Barry... Charming place with simply outstanding staff - make sure you meet up with owners Ken and Ruth. Ken showed me his Kenyan straw hut with African outside fridge cooled by soaking coal in water. And another cold beer! All in all - a wonderful experience. Highly recommend to fellow Trip Advisors.
