dissapointed with the Ritz

The hotel is old and tired. In great need of refurbishment and a "refreshment "of their front desk and consierge staff.
Prices for using the hotel car are ridiculous. 200 euros for airport pickup, while a regular cab will cost 50 euros
And eating at the hotel will set you back 9 euros per a regular cup of coffe and 80 euros for gazpacho soup and a soggy caesar salad.
The front end service staff, unfortunately exhibit the same attitude best exhibited by disenfranchised Paris waiters. Younger, friendlier and more helpful staff would be a welcome change .
The location is excellent and walking distance to major Paris sights, nevertheless there are some smaller hotels around the corner and in the area where I would stay before I ever came back to the Ritz.
In love with The Ritz

My Mother and I stayed at The Ritz for three nights in February. It was everything I thought it would be.
The service was excellent and the room was incredible ( we were upgraded without any mention).
The location is the best in Paris! I cannot wait to return.

I stayed at the Ritz in Paris for a night in June on business as my usual hotel (Renaissance at la Defense) was fully booked. I was reasonably excited at the prospect of staying at such an iconic establishment, but I have to say, I was almost entirely under-awed by my experience. From the snooty reception and concierge staff, to the TINY room, the whole hotel gave the impression of leveraging off it's name, rather than actually offering a decent standard of accomodation and service. Perhaps the Ritz isn't targeting western european business travellers, it would certainly seem that their larger clientele now comes from the middle east and Africa, and perhaps the 'old school opulence' works for these guests. From a western perspective, however, the pastel pink mongrammed bath towels, the golden swan-shaped taps (i'm not kidding) and the ornate baroque lamps next to the bed just seemed overdone, worn around the edges and quite frankly, a bit tacky.
It's not just the decor though! 78EUR for a steak and chips on room service, with 9EUR for sides of vegetables is laughable. My 14EUR can of Heineken from the minibar didn't jump out, open itself and give me a massage, as I would expect for that price and the 1.5hr wait (and 4 phone calls) to get my television to work properly is frankly unacceptable. Now I am not a diva, nor am I used to the best hotels in the world, but modern chains like Marriott, Hilton and Westin knock the socks off this crumbling old grandmother clinging to a spot in central Paris and maintaining it's status through the tack-loving dollars of middle eastern consumers.

We took the most expensive rooms, several of them to accommodate our extended family. Not impressed. The hotel itself is lovely but everything is old and I don't mean the wonderful antiques, but bath fixtures coming off the wall, the hotel door that would not open again and again (the staff that would keep us hours waiting), the old, dirty rugs, the dust everywhere. A very long wait for room-service. Definitely NOT the quality of service that one expects when staying at the Ritz. We enjoyed the restaurants for lunch, and dinner, as well as for breakfast and the food was wonderful! Some staff members were very friendly and helpful, others were outrageous. We are an unassuming, happy family, who just want to enjoy the great museums, art and culture. We enjoy the nice things in life without being pedantic, so it comes as a great surprise to find such a landmark and expensive hotel not being what one expects.
