The hotel has updated the rooms however forgot to modernize the bathroom as well.
Besides that we had a good stay and were surprised by the nondutch level of service. As we missed breakfast we called roomservice to check if it might be possible to get a sandwich upstairs and were surprised by a full breakfast, cooked by one of the waiters. Very different from the average Dutch service!!

stayed one night. parking garage not with hotel, but you can get a week's pass, better deal than per day. walking distance from center of haarlem, not bad driving distance to zandvoort shore. from hotel, you can catch the city bus and get dropped off at main train station and about 15 mins train ride to amsterdam. if you like cold drinks, most fridges in european hotels i've stayed in are tiny. ice is available but slooooow... takes holding a small cup for a few minutes to fill it up. staff dealt with was friendly. comfy bed with 4 pillows for queen sz. balconies. not bad for price!

A very nice hotel and good alternative to Amsterdam
Guest name: trinzeon, New York City, New York
I stay at the Carlton frequently for work. It is very convenient to the airport by train or by taxi. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The internet service is fast and reliable. The staff is generally friendly and accomodating. The restaurant is very good, if a bit pricey (but not above normal European prices). There is a nice pub to watch football matches. There is plenty of shopping nearby and a nice park across the street. There is a weekly antique fair just around the corner. Haarlem's main square is about a 10 minute walk, and the train station about a 25 minute walk. Very easy in either case. There are nice canals, as well as a nice windmill within easy walking distance. From the hotel to Amsterdam Centraal will take about an hour walking to the train and then by train to the center of town. Once you have been to Amsterdam once or twice, I strongly recommend staying in Haarlem. It is much less expensive and a pretty and friendly town.
Insisted on charging us for an extra night.

When we checked out, after a 15 night stay, we were surprised to learn that we had been charged for an additional night--i.e., the night prior to the day on which we had arrived. I argued with the manager 3 times. He kept repeating it is hotel policy that, if they had been fully booked on the night prior to a guest's arrival, they will charge the guest for that previous night, even though the guest wasn't actually there on that night. I never heard of such a policy. I showed the manager my confirmation e-mail, which correctly listed the nights when we were actually staying in the hotel. My confirmation e-mail said nothing about the hotel's policy of charging for an extra night. My advice to travelers: if you want to avoid the kind of treatment we received from this manager, you should avoid staying at this hotel.
