We stayed at the Royal Hotel for 3 nights during Euro 2008. We made the reservation using a web-site in October 2007 and were a bit at unease considering the other reviews. To make sure our reservation was in order we made a call to the hotel a week in advance. We had made a reservation for 4 rooms and there was a little fuss but all of the rooms were available.
The rooms was very large at size with a seperate toilet. The furniture was by far modern but very charming. The only complaint we had was the air-condition which didn't work at all. This was in June with temperatures above 30 Celsius.
However the location was so excellent that we will come back for sure and we recommend the Royal Hotel to all travellers seeking a hotel in the very center of Vienna.

As I've read carefully all the reviews posted before I traveled to Vienna, I was really worried thinking about the problems that I might experience taking into consideration what the others travelers shared: poor customer service, overbooking and so on.
Arriving at the hotel I had one of the best surprises: not only that the location is absolutely great- few steps from Stephan’s Dom, but the hotel overall exceeded my anticipations: very nice, quiet and large room, friendly staff, good breakfast. I warmly recommend it!

I booked this hotel because its location is very good. The hotel belongs to a hotel-chain that also includes Graben and Regina. A friend of mine had told me that one week before she had booked at the same hotel and they told her there was a problem at their system and there was not availability at the hotel. Her only choice was to stay at Regina, which is the less central of the three hotels. When I arrived at the hotel, they told me exactly the same. I complained, and the answer of the sales-manager was that if I don't like Regina they can cancel my reservation and I should find another hotel on my own!!! While I was waiting at the reception, I noticed that only the clients that had bookings directly at the hotel checked in. Everyone who had a confirmation through internet ended up to Regina. And of-course the behaviour of the reception and the sales was almost hostile.
Very poor customer service, don't go there !!!

I had booked and prepaid a reservation in this hotel at the end of February 2008 at mid-December 2007. The day we arrived there we were told that they were over-booked and had to move us to a partner hotel. We had chosen Royal hotel for the location which is absolutely great, near Stephansdom, and we had to go to a hotel that was 30 min away on foot from the city centre. The attitude of the staff was very rude. They told us that we could even sleep at the reception but they couldn't do anything for us. They offered to give our money back, but this was not an option because we wanted to spend time visiting Vienna, not looking for a hotel. Eventually we had to accept the room in the partner hotel, but I was very disappointed by the very poor customer service we got in a 4* hotel in the city centre of Vienna. My advice to those who travel to Vienna: don't choose Royal hotel !

We spent the winter holidays in Vienna and chose Royal Hotel based on the reviews praising its location (which is indeed great) and the fact that it has been recently refurbished. Bad idea. The room was recently refurbished indeed - floors have been changed, yet there was no carpeting, which tends to be quite cold and annoying during winter. The free Internet access was not free at all. The AC was not working and this, together with the poorly insulated windows and the constant draught in the room caused us to leave Vienna with a terrible cold. We asked for - and received - a heater to cope with the winter. We had to leave it constantly on. The cleaning services were appaling - starting with the fact that you were supposed to observe the maid's schedule if you wanted your room cleaned. Continuing with the fact that, after 8 days, we had to REQUEST that the sheets be changed, as no one was inclined to take any initiative in that area. Toiletries were scarce - never have I been to a four star hotel that was providing only soap and some weird liquid to be used as both shampoo and body wash. The minibar had a special key attached to the key to the room, and during the last two days of our staying we were no longer given the key to the minibar. Parking is not included in the room rate, it costs an additional 20 something EUR per night and basically you cannot leave your car anywhere in Vienna on the street.
