This hotel is very convenient for visiting the GWU. Especially for parents visiting students in the halls that surround the hotel. The hotel itself is quite outdated (reminds you of your grandma's house, but it's not!), but clean and reasonably priced. It is within walking distance of the metro, the mall, and Georgetown. There's a well equipped convenience store right next door. Every room has a kitchenette, excluding a microwave (?!). Continental breakfast is pretty good, coffee is especially good. Staff is a bit stiff but still helpful. I've tried several other hotels in the area, and have returned to the State Plaza the last few times due to its extremely convenient location.

We were in DC to see our daughter graduate from Americorps*NCCC and to sight see. We wanted a place that was in walking distance to the monuments and didn't cost and"arm and a leg". This hotel fit the bill. We walked the 21 blocks to the capitol , the museums, the Mall and monuments.
The room was clean and comfortable. The kitchenette was great for drinks and leftovers, as well as a place to sit and read when others were watching TV or napping.
The staff was courteous and helpful. Perhaps the best feature was unlimited access parking in the hotel garage for $24 per day. If you wanted your car, the valet would get it for you or you could take it yourself. It was nice not to have to worry about walking from a parking garage x blocks away or worrying about feeding a meter. The tip was a minimal concern.
We felt very safe in the hotel at all times.
The CVS and liquor store were convenient and there was a 7-11, Subway and Starbucks within 3 blocks, TGIFridays 5 halfblocks north and the rest of downtown and George Washington Univ. restaurants within 7 short blocks.
For the tourist, the location was perfect! I would stay there again.

Clean, great hotel for a family to stay! Good location. There is a Subway sandwich place two blocks from there, on 19th st. They close late, was the only thing open after 9pm. It's a great deal for the money!

This hotel is great despite being located a little bit far away from the usual Washington tourist attractions. The bonus is that it is located directly opposite the George Washington Uni. The campus security guards add a good, safe feel to the area even at night. The Metro is about an 8min walk away at Foggy Bottom. The hotel is within walking distance of the Lincoln Memorial (10-15min walk).
The hotel rooms themselves are a little dated, but the kitchen is reasonably equipped so you can cook a simple meal if you want to. They are currently renovating the restaurant so breakfast is in one of the conference rooms. Not too good as often there are no seats left. Also, the breakfast room is not cleaned frequently such that you have to clean up the mess the previous person left (crumbs, spilled milk and all!) Despite that, I had a great time at the hotel and would recommend it to any budget conscious travellers.

We stayed at the State Plaza Hotel from June 1st to 4th. This was our second time, the first in 2002. It surpasses the 2 & half rating. Yes, the hotel is old/dated. But, remember this is a city hotel. London and New York hotels, for $80, are way worse. Everything at the State Plaza Hotel is clean and well maintained. The rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated. The kitchen is a big plus. The staff was very nice and helpful for a taxi, directions, extra towels, etc.. We enjoyed the FREE continental breakfast. All the pasteries were very fresh.
We didn't have a problem finding places to eat and drink. Right next store is a CVS and a liquar store. We ate at Columbia Plaza ( 1 block away), Red Cross Cafe (half block away), and TGIF (short five blocks away). All were normal/home prices. Also, there is a Starbucks (two blocks away). The entire area is safe to walk in the day and night. Washington DC is a big city. Expect to walk alot no matter where you stay.
We love the State Plaza Hotel. We will be back.
