I stayed at this hotel as I was down in Coventry and needed a place to stay. I chose this place because I had previously emailed the General Manager, Heather Thomas asking who she was as I had her address in my contacts (for a reason I still don't know).
She sent some very nice replys and said if I was down in Coventry anytime let her know and she would do me a preferential rate and buy me a drink! No discounted rate as I just walked in and asked for a room without telling her.
I went out for a few hours to eat (so no comments on hotel restaurant) and when I got back she was behind the desk and true to her word we had a drink and a chat together - shes a very nice person.
So after being perked up I went to the room with a positive feeling. Sure enough the room was perfect - I definately had a refurbished room - everything sparked and nothing was ripped or torn!
View was crap to be honest though. A long road and some run down shops in front of a sticky window isn't very pleasant. Closing the new dust free curtains solved this simply enough.
Something unusual for a hotel though, everything in the room just worked as it should. Shower had hot water when needed, tv had clear channels and a remote, all the lights had bulbs and the mattress was so comfortable I was surprised it didnt have that new mattress smell.
The bathroom smelt better than the room as it had been loaded with apple smelling air freshener. I left the shower on for a bit to try and ware it away as it was overpowering.
It was a shame that all this still had a crimp to it - the bin hadn't been empited. At least I think it hadn't been emptied, that or the cleaner has a hungry puppy. Why that you ask? The only thing that was in the bin was a large empty tin of Pedigree Chum!!
On checking out I found out my bill had been comped by 20%. I guess Heather lived upto her promise after all!
All this goes to show that a good manager can make the word of difference to a place. I thoroughly recommend it (but maybe try asking for a room with a view if you like nice views)

Stayed 2 nights in a superior room. The room was spacious but not what I would call superior, pretty much standard amenities. The room was identical to the one photographed by a previous contributor. It was clean, quiet but needs a bit of a make over.
The owners idea of a makeover seems to be paint everything cream!!
Don't let the outside put you off it's not that bad.
I had room service meals both nights and was delighted with the quality of the food and service.
Really handy for the Uni and the Cathederal the hotel is literally behind the Cathederal.
For the same money as a Travelodge type place you get a slightly faded full service hotel with good food - one of life's dilemmas!

I spent 2 nights at the Brittania and found it a poor experience.
Check-in was fine, check-out was fine. In-between wasn't so good. The location is quite central, I was attending a convention in the Leofric that was overbooked, so stayed here instead.
The staff were pleasant enough, the hotel has an old feel to it, but the room was pretty shoddy. The sheets hadn't been cleaned properly, there were obvious stains. The room had a bad smell, there was mould growing in the bath area, the bathroom just had an unclean look to it, and the room decor was dated...oh, and it was COLD, surprisingly so for May. The table/chair looked like it had been through the ringer a few times aswell. There was no swipecard entry, just a key for your room.
I would not recommend staying here, unless you get lucky and have a better room than I did.

Guest name: computerperson, Mayo,
I stayed here as part of a school trip last April. I read reviews and I was not looking forward to what was ahead. When we arrived after travelling from 3 in the morning the night before til about 4 in the day, we just wanted to get to our rooms and relax. We all had big suitcases so we had to take the lift but once we got into it it wouldn't work properly. The room was quite spacious but very stuffy and we couldn' t open the window. The food was of poor taste and poor selection. But other then that this hotel is suitable to stay in, as long as you're not looking for something too fancy.
