Decent stay, old decor, but lots to eat

This hotel was okay. The decor was "American Mid-west Grandma's house," but it actually provided much entertainment for us. When we sat down in the lounge (the bar was nice, not a great selection of beer, but it worked), the sun was beating in on our card game we had going. Others were watching the European football finals on the television. We tried to pull the curtains over to shield us from the setting sun, and the curtains fell off the wall into my arms! They weighed a ton and were held up by the world's tiniest rod! We laughed for quite some time about that, but later we laughed even harder when our tour bus driver did the same thing on the other side! It was hilarious. We would have warned her if we weren't so involved in our card game. But it was funnier that both curtains fell victim to our sun-shielding antics.
Apparently, the food was good. I ate the bread, but I'm really picky. My friends ate everything, and lots of it at the buffet dinner and breakfast.
This was the stopping point on the way from London to Edinburgh, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. So if you don't mind geriatric decor and faulty drapes, go for it.

Stayed here for one Saturday night in June, 2008.
There were three large coach parties in an a football presentation night going on in the banquet room . . . but you really wouldn't have noticed much of it.
The staff were nice and friendly. Food was good. Rooms were average (although water pressure was a bit poor and shower curtains should be banned!)
Free wireless Internet was available all over the hotel.
. . . and I didn't find any dirt anywhere! (in reference to the award for being the dirtiest hotel in the UK!)

Awful awful awful. Do not stay here under any circumstances. Waited 5 minutes for anyone to come to reception, and when the person did come away from the bar where she was serving, no apology. I was not hacked off at the fact she was busy serving the coach party but just the no apology.
Told there was no room service (OK) but can take a tray to my room. Was told I was in a newly refurbished room (room 79). All I can is glad I wasn't in an un-refurbished room. It stank of smoke, was completely miserable in every possible regard, freezing cold (could not turn on any heating) and was a disgrace. Embaressed to be British if any tourists came here.
Had a miserable processed frozen chicken burger and chips and 2 quick pints and went to bed as better to be alsleep than awake.
In the morning asked where breakfast was and was asked for my room number. Was promptly told I had not paid for breakfast. While this was not what I asked, I smiled, acknowledged the comment and said I was happy to pay.
Ate a rubber english breakfast off the bain marie thing and left.
A total total total disgrace. I have stayed in lots and lots of hotels, expensive, cheap, posh and not, and this is just the worst on every level.

Having red some reviews I was unsure as to the whole trip experience regarding the Britannia. How wrong I was perhaps I stayed after achange of management but the staff were curteous and friendly, the service was second to none and the place was delightful. I loved my stay there.
I am more than wiling to recommend The Britannia Stockport to my friends are they ever in the area.

The Negatives:
1) The springs seemed to come through on the old cheapo mattress
2) Could not get an Iron Board for 4 days. Never got one.
3) Message was left at front desk for me but never got it.
4) Mis-Advertised about Airport Transfer being included. Got 3 different stories. I ended up taking the train.
5) Room smelled like a smoky bar.
6) Bed lines were stained and thin.
7) No one at the front desk for an hour while a room full of people in the lobby expected help on a Sunday morning.
The Positive:
Strong Water Pressure in the Shower
