Timhotel Italie Bercy is a good basic hotel, slightly worn but clean in a very underrated area of Paris. The breakfast was adequate, the staff friendly, the room a bit spartan but comfortable enough. Many reviewers commented on the small shower room. Compared to our bathroom in a small hotel in Normandy last spring, this was large enough to hold a dance! Large bathrooms are not a common feature of French hotels.
Some of the comments by previous visitors to the Timhotel Italie Bercy surprised us. Obviously the man who experienced bedbugs has reason to complain, however as he seemed to be the only person to experience them, it would appear to be a "one off" problem. Many of the other complaints should be directed to tour operaters and booking agents. One review said that it was not up to the 3 or 4 star standard the tour operater promised. This is NOT a 4 star hotel. According to my online travel agent, it is a 2 star hotel! Another reviewer said it was $100 overpriced and should have cost about $80. We paid less than $80 per night. If my maths calculation is right, he paid almost 2 1/2 times what we did. We used GTA, an online travel agency through Travelsupermarket.com. Someone else complained about it being farther from the centre than he expected. Where is the centre of Paris? If you stay near Notre Dame, you're miles from the Eiffel Tower, and vice versa. If you want to be near to a certain landmark, it is best to check a map.
This brings me to the immediiate location. To us this was the best thing about this hotel. It is not full of landmark monuments, but is a quiet neighbourhood with local bars and restaurants and some very interesting domestic architecture. For a detailed walk of the area, see the Eyewitness Guide to Paris from DK Publishers. So, if you want a friendly, small hotel in a quiet, interesting neighbourhood close to the Metro, for a reasonable price, then we believe this is worth a 4 out of 5 rating. If you are looking for luxury in an upmarket part of Paris, then go somewhere else and and be prepared to spend a LOT more than ?41 per night for a double room with breakfast!

Bed Bugs 2
Guest name: Gpari, Zurich
I stayed in the hotel for 5 nights. Unfortunately, I had the "chance" to enjoy the bed bugs family established at the hotel at the time of my stay. It seems that complaints from JimmyGB 3 weeks before my stay did not work. I sent a message at the hotel manager and I hope they will find a solution. For historical reasons I stayed in room 410.
I liked it

We were initially put off by some bad reviews, but had stayed at TimHotel Nation, so expected a reasonably good experience. The rooms we occupied were completely adequate, very clean, fairly bright, quite small, well fitted. What you'd expect from a well managed economy chain. This is the kind of place you'd stay in if you mostly wanted a comfortable place to sleep and get cleaned up for another great day in Paris. (Although we spent a pleasant Christmas Eve and Christmas night in our room). Not a tourist area, but good restaurants nearby, superb metro access, pleasant neighbourhood. Our room was quiet, it didn't have the usual brick wall facing the window, the lift worked well.

Bed bugs
Guest name: JimmyGB, Bristol
I spent 4 nights at the Timhotel. Early on my second night I realised I was not alone in my bed. In the morning, I noticed 27 bed bug bites all over my body. Bruno, the receptionist, was pretty indifferent though I was offered free breakfast on my last day - I declined. I can't believe they treated the room properly so if you do choose to stay in this hotel, make sure you avoid room 403. I could offer some pictures of my bitten body but some of you may be eating.
Pulito e confortevole.
