My wife and in-laws and I spent three nights at the Hotel de Rome in Riga in June, 2007. We had three rooms. This is an EXCELLENT hotel in a PERFECT LOCATION. From one of our rooms (a suite) we could see the freedom monument and changing of the guards. It is right on the pedestrian square in at the entrance to the old city. Everything you want to see is walking distance away! The hotel staff was very attractive and young, and very professional. Everyone spoke English well (and other languages I am sure). The restaurant at the top is top-notch, and one of the finest in the city (Restaurant Otto-Schwartz). This is also where the breakfast is served (included with our rooms). Breakfast was excellent, as was the setting and service (buffet) but they keep your table tidy and continue to bring you tea or coffee. The bar on the 3rd floor bar is also nice, and they have Absinthe, which was neat to try. Service is always very professional. The rooms were nice and clean and bathrooms nicely sized. The suites were a very nice size, with a sitting area (couches and chairs) that made having guests we were visiting comfortable enough to meet up with us in our room (with great windows overlooking the square and the Freedom Monument). The security is also excellent and they keep a close eye on everyone as they enter the hotel (you must walk past security to get in and at night they actually control the door as to not let just anybody walk in [guests only]). The area is very safe and the nightlife is quite active well into the a.m. (2 a.m.). The rooms facing the pedestrian square can be a bit loud, since everyone is out and having fun well into the wee hours, but this is also a plus (if you are fun loving) as it helps make you realize when you have maybe gone to your room too early in the night. The outdoor pub a two-minute walk away has great beer and has blankets you can use if you get cold. You can drink until something like 2 a.m. There are tons of fabulous restaurants, shops, and site minutes from the hotel (all accessible easily on foot). We were a little bit annoyed that we had to pay for Wi-fi access, but it was nice that this access was even available (we had own lap tops). We will definitely be back to Riga and will stay at this hotel for sure.

Very relaxing stay, great location for the old town. Breakfast good selection of cooked and cold buffet, fish meat and cheese, nice selection of bread.
First obtained a good price for B&B through 3rd party - asked hotel to match it which they did, I prefer to book direct with the hotel if competitive price.
Hotel arranged taxi transfer from airport at 10 lats, which was not the lowest price but reasonable and reliable. (About £10).
Friendly staff and very clean sparkling hotel.
No security problems in Riga.

The De Rome has a major draw: its gt location. On the edge of the old town and overlooking the park/ river it is a short stroll to everywhere. Slightly "Soviet style" harsh decor by western standards....but that's all part of the Riga experience. Rooms on the exec floor can have good park views but the downside is the tram noise from the fairly busy road.....but it wasn't too bad.
Good brekkie even if the staff were a bit sullen.....go see Riga before the UK stag parties totally wreck it!

Great location, right on the edge of the old city. The hotel was clean, quiet and the staff were friendly enough. We were initially put into a smoking room which stank but the staff were happy to put us into a non-smoking room. I thought the TV satellite choice was very poor and you had to pay for anything decent.
The hotel doesn't have a pool or gym but it does have a sauna. You have to ring reception to have them turn it on for you.
The restaurant is nice and and has good views being on the top floor. We only had breakfast there which was the usual continental offering with plenty to choose from and of good quality.
I'd definitely stay there again as it worked out at a little over £50 each per night (2 sharing a twin room) which was excellent value.
