We had the pleasure of spending four days in this great hotel at the start of honeymoon. Reception is friendly, polite and corteous. Our room was immaculate every day and breakfast was great. The Britania really feels like a home. Location is perfect, the city centre is just round the corner.

This is the second time I have stayed at Hotel Britania while in Lisbon on business, and both times I have enjoyed a wonderful stay. As so many other reviewers have commented, the staff at this hotel are exceptionally wonderful. They really go out of their way to be helpful and welcoming, while being thoroughly professional. The room was spacious, quiet, very nicely decorated, and absolutely spotless. I really appreciated the free wireless. The location was very convenient. I would be delighted to stay at this hotel again.

We stayed at Hotel Britania from 15th to 18th May 2008 and would thoroughly recommend it. We booked via the hotel chain’s own web site www.heritage.pt and paid just over 700 Euros for three nights in a superior double room. The building is an art deco gem, with many of the original features restored and retained, and new fittings have been tastefully selected. Our room was larger than expected, with a huge double bed and separate lobby with mini bar. The bathroom contained many original art deco features. The hotel is located on a side street, one street away from the main Avenida Liberdade, so I guess none of the rooms has a view. The hotel is quite conveniently located, though it is not in the very heart of Lisbon. The nearest metro station (Avenida) is two minutes walk away, and we used that when we were venturing a little further, but most places in the city centre are within walking distance of the hotel. However, the walk up to the Bairro Alto will certainly give you an appetite! All the staff were wonderful and very helpful. We saw the room service menu but never tried it, as we ate out every day. We found “Luca” (modern Italian), which is very close to the hotel and allegedly the coolest restaurant in Lisbon (it certainly filled up very quickly), whilst the concierge recommended “Sacramento” (modern Portuguese), on the edge of the Bairro Alto. Both were excellent and gave us hearty evening meals for two, including drinks and wine, for under 80 Euros. We also ate too much in the various cake shops along and around Avenida Liberdade. We loved our leisurely buffet breakfasts, served in the hotel bar in the morning: Portuguese breads and pastries, fruit, cereals, cheese and cold meats, and a modest selection of hot foods including eggs and sausages. A long weekend is plenty of time to explore the city, but don’t forget to venture out to Belem, which is just beyond Lisbon. We chose to do a Hop On Hop Off city bus tour which included Belem. We started the tour at Praca do Comercio. One tip which we would pass on is to visit the town of Sintra. It’s just over half an hour away by train, and definitely worth it. The hotel concierge will help you find the train station – it’s very easy. Sintra is where the Portuguese royal family would escape the heat of Lisbon in the summer. The whole town is geared up for tourists and can get quite busy in peak season, but there’s another Hop On Hop Off bus which will get you from the train station to all the tourist spots in this delightful little town. We think we’ll probably return to Lisbon, and if we do we’ll definitely stay at the Britania again.

The hotel is unassuming from the outside but beautiful once you step inside the doors. Our room was very spacious and clean. Excellent bathroom. The bar/breakfast area was very attractive with free internet access.
Location wise it was very good as you can walk to the bairro alto and alfama areas and pick up the metro. It felt very safe.
The best thing about the hotel was the staff. The reception staff were wonderful in helping with suggestions for where to go and where to eat and the barman was really lovely. We also lost our mobile phone in the taxi to the airport and the hotel staff did all they could to help. I have never known staff to be as friendly and attentive in every way. They really helped to make our stay.
When we go back to Lisbon we will definitely book here again.

The Britania has a standard of service that we have seldom had the pleasure of experiencing. Its not large and showy like many of its close neighbours. No, its better than that. Its quiet, refined and classy and provides quite possibly the most relaxing and homely ambience one could hope for in a big city, whilst still making you feel like you're Lording it, big time. The staff have a genuine interest in your comfort and are very keen to help and to pamper you. Just as one small example of many that I could mention, we were invited to check-out 2 hours later than normal to make the most of our last day, after which we sat in the cool of the air-conditioned lounge bar for a few hours before heading off to the airport. Twice during that time staff offered us complimentary coffee and pastries and then when the receptionists changed shift, the girl leaving made a special effort to come over and wish us a good journey and thank us for staying with them.
The hotel itself is conveniently located just off one of Lisbon's main avenues, The Avendia Liberdade and withing easy walking distance of the city's best sights. Once you've mastered the Metro's ticket machines, armed with four Euros the whole city is at your disposal for the day by tube, bus, tram, lift and funicular. The "Avenida" metro station is very convenient as is the aerobus stop for your journey to and from Lisbon airport. Lisbon is a fun place to go for a city break and very inexpensive compared to other cities. We would wholeheartedly recommend it and The Britania to anyone who likes doing that sort of thing. To sum up I'd say its understated luxury, stylish and great value.
