Hotel Don Luis - good location, but a little tired

We just came back from 3 nights at Don Luis. The staff was friendly and helpful, the breakfast was nothing to write home about, but still stocked with some fruit, juice, rolls, pastry, cereal, yoghurt, cold cuts and scrambled eggs (watery, as many hotel eggs are). There is free parking in a protected lot if you have a rental car, and the location is very close to the tourist office and the shopping mall (with a fully stocked grocery on the bottom level). You can get everything you need in the nearby mall, including very nice Chilean wine for under $15. There is a small exercise room on the top floor (I saw no one using it) and there are 3 computer terminals in the lobby for free internet. We stayed in a room with a queen bed, and my sons stayed in a room with 2 twins. Theirs was larger, with a bathroom that fit a tub/shower. Our bath only had a shower. All in all, it was pretty nice, worn looking, but nice, and you can't beat the location. But after seeing the Holiday Inn Express, I would probably opt to stay there, even though I consider Holiday Inns to be less than great hotels. This one looked modern, clean and with better views.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, this is a tired looking hotel (in a less than scintillating city) which does not warrant its 4 star rating. The hotel is situated on a cross-roads and the traffic noise in our 7th floor room was constant and loud until the early hours and then we were kept awake by the virtual non-stop barking of the many stray dogs that abound in Puerto Montt.
The bedroom itself was poorly decorated with minimal furnishings - drawer-space was woefully inadequate and we were grateful that we were only staying overnight and didn't need to unpack our suitcases. However, the king-size bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small but adequate with a good supply of clean towels and hot water. We tried the bar to use our 1st drink free voucher but it was an unpleasant experience due to the presence of 6 smoking and inebriated ex-pats (British I'm embarrassed to report) and we left almost immediately.
There were some plus points in that the reception staff were most helpful and, amongst other things, secured our dinner reservation at Yates restaurant, which specialises in seafood (of superb quality) has excellent service, and is set on a pier a 5 minute walk away from the Don Luis. The receptionist also assisted with negotiating a lower rate with a taxi we hired for 2 hours, and to open up the restaurant early the next morning as we were checking out early for the trans-Andes lake crossing.

We stayed there 3 nights. It has a good mall 2 minutes walking. The room was good, clean. The stuff very friendly, the breakfast not so good as a brazilian breakfast. Internet free for 20 min. - 3 PCs.
Two single beds, room rate 77 usd.

I booked at this hotel because it was at the top of the user popularity ranking for Puerto Montt. I should have noted that none of the users had written a review. The hotel reminded me of a tired European hotel with a small functional lobby, disinterested staff, small cramped rooms and no facilities to speak of. There was a full breakfast included, but they would run out of hot food almost as fast as it was carried in from the kitchen. It was adequate accomodation, but I would have preferred something a bit more upscale.
