We have just returned from a week's stay at the Camps Bay Retreat and had a great time. We found the staff friendly and attentive - often arranging tours or reservations at short notice.
Our suite in the Deck House was huge - there was no utentials or pans in the kitchen which made the cooker a bit pointless - but hey, we were on holiday and had no plans to cook ourselves!
The location is great for both Camps Bay and Cape Town - we had a hire car but the open top bus gives good links to all the attractions in the area.
The evening meals were good, although the menu doesn't vary that much from night to night. With some great restaurants in the area this does not cause any problems.
Overall, a great, laid back hotel.

We were undecided to stay at The Bay Hotel on the front or the Camps Bay Retreat. So glad we chose the Camps Bay Retreat. This is a lovely colonial style house in beautiful grounds. We had a large room in the main house overlooking the tennis courts and it was just perfect. There was a huge victorian bath in the main bedroom and a large glass fronted separate shower. The setting of this house is wonderful and very romantic. The evening meal is served by candle light on the terrace and you can watch the sun set.We had no problems with the hotel service at all and we were made to feel very welcome. They make up excellent picnic baskets !! If you wish to eat at the Bay Hotel there is a free taxi service. You can get to the beach from the hotel via a downhill path through the grounds. For a romantic peaceful stay you can't beat the Camps Bay Retreat. We will certainly book again.

Most wonderful honeymoon destination

My husband and I have the most wonderful luxurious stay in Camps Bay Retreat. The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for us, the gardens were a treat and the food amazing.
A great location for lounging around in the fantastic Camps Bay. Couldn't recommend it more for a honeymoon destination.

Now i will get the negatives out of the way first as they shouldn't detract from the overall impresssion. The staff it must be said were not the greatest but then in the whole two weeks in SA they were all the same which is a shame but it's nothing to cry about. There was also a little annoyance with getting a gate key and the gateman being asleep at 4am. However if i was to go to cape town again i would stay here without a doubt, location is amazing and speaking to capetonians at the wedding we were at they would say camp's bay was the best part of cape town. What more could you ask for peace and quiet and then great beaches bars and restaurants a 5-10min stroll down the hill. We spent 3 nights here and then 2 at the commodore on the V&A Waterfront and seriously regretted having moved, you really can do all the cape town highlights easily from here. We stayed in room 2 of the main hotel, which was perfect as it looked out to sea and over the main garden. Contrary to the man before our beds were turned down every night and all sorts of other great touches like, a cold bottle of water deposited each night on the side table and a tin of homemade biscuits on the corner table. breakfast was lovely and the outside restaurant has such a fab view that even if the service is a little slow you should be relaxing anyway as you are on holiday!

Like some of the other reviews on here, we also felt that this wonderful location was badly let down by doleful service.
The setting is spectacular: an old country house that has been converted into a charming hotel with an ocean view in front of you (you can hear the waves crashing) and the mountains behind. We stayed in one of the newer deck rooms reached across an enchanting suspension bridge. But although on the surface everything looks wonderful, after you've been there a few hours you notice the faults: the wardrobes are cramped, the shower floor dangerously uneven, paint splashes and cracked tiles in the bathroom , the rough wood of the deck floor (one of us got a splinter).
And then there is the service, or lack of it: one poor boy rushing round doing all the breakfasts by himself; the failure to do turndown; a failure to leave fresh towels; a sloppy manicure; staff who come to the room when the privacy sign is up (this is extremely irritating since the deck rooms have glass plated doors and windows opposite the bed - I was in bed at the time the maid tried to come: couldn't she see it wasn't a good time??).
We won't be going back.
