Having selected hotels with a lot of architectural charm and age to them during a recent trip to Mexico, Posada Maria Cristina fit the bill. It was an historic hotel - the stables (and secret meeting place) for Cortez and his soldiers. Given that, it radiated an atmosphere of clandestine encounters. The rooms were well worn and there was some cosmetic repair needed, but it was located well and the restaurant and staff were extremely helpful. Even though the hotel was located in a busy area, we found the room to be very quiet and the gardens to be filled with parrots (the only ones we saw outside of cages in all of Mexico) and lovely flowers.

Pretty but overpriced

Our family stayed here for a weekend in mid-December. Yes, the grounds are lovely, and an oasis in the middle of this bustling city. Our room was cool and clean, and pretty but very worn. The bathroom definitely needs some refreshing with regard to tiling, grouting, and a functioning toilet.
My main complaint was the booming nightclub noise all around the hotel. It came from at least three locations, and went on until 3-4 in the morning. The otherwise lovely staff seemed surprised that it bothered us. The hotel was also hosting events with live and amplified music during the day, so there really was no peace to be had.
Additionally, there were quite a few unexpected add-on costs, including extra fees for our kids in the same room, extra costs for the extra water required for them (and apparently not included in their extra fee), and two overpriced drinks at the bar. Breakfast is not included. All this on top of a fairly heavy tariff of over $200 a night for one room with two double beds. A lot to pay for colonial atmosphere.

We just returned from a trip to Cuernevaca and found the Posada Maria Cristina to be in need of much repair. The gardens are charming, but watch where you walk as broken steps, tiles etc. abound. Our first room was dark with an old bed-spread, plaster walls in the bathroom were cracking and tiles were missing. The floor was dirty and was sticky. We asked for another room which appeared a little better, but still in need of housekeeping---dirty floors. We thought we could make it through the night and leave the next day until we laid on the bed. It felt like we were lying on box springs and had a difficult time trying to get some sleep. The young man was very nice at the reception, but we would definitely NOT stay at this hotel again. We also felt overcharged as we paid around $185--with tax--remember the added taxes. We looked at Casa Colonial the next morning and would have been much happier there---clean and beautiful and for much less.

I was concerned after seeing some of the other reviews, but the hotel was quite lovely and in a good, convenient location. We stayed in a charming upstairs suite that had its own romantic private patio overlooking a beautiful courtyard. The room was well appointed and felt very authentic with beautiful tiles and slightly rustic wood furniture. The tile bathroom was particularly nice. The staff was helpful and friendly. It was an easy walk to the town center, and easy to get to the highway to visit nearby attractions such as the Xochicalco ruins. I would certainly stay here again.
