I've stayed here three times and have always had a good experience.
The location is excellent, right on the water and close to the town area.
The staff in general are quite pleasant and friendly.
The rooms could use some attention, but they are always clean and the bathrooms are quite big. The rooms themselves are nothing special but we always manage to get a room with a lovely view of the sea!
We LOVE the buffet breakfast and dinner, it's really delicious. I don't usually recommend eating in hotels, but I found the spread interesting and tasty.
I'm surprised however that they call it a 5 star though, I'd say it's a good 3 star or low 4 star. I'd recommend it for a 1-2 day stay.

OK - but not a 5* hotel. Be careful with bills!

We booked our weekend minibreak to enjoy the first sun-filled weekend this year and chose Milenij as we have stayed here before and regarded it if not perfect at least the best hotel in Opatija. Enough has been written on the subject of rooms, they're showing a bit of wear but are kept very clean; the location is great, views magnificient, spoilt only by the Rijeka raffinery smoke in the far. The spa is small and hardly well maintained, the sauna is hygienically questionable. All this has not changed in the last few years and Milenij remains a good hotel, however not of a 5 star standard if compared with western European/American hotels, and hardly a "deluxe" category of the "World hotels" chain it is a member of.
Service is good, however room service is below par. We ordered breakfast in the room and received plenty of bread and marmalade, but no butter, no coffee (which we ordered), no pastries, ... The bread was stale, at least a day old.
We went out for an early (and delicious) lunch, to Plavi podrum in the nearby village of Volosko.
In the evening began the conundrums, there was apparently some carnival in progress, with loud and thumping folk music, heard well inside the hotel. There was also a concert of Tereza Kesovija being held that evening in the hotel, however we heard none of Tereza in the room, sadly.
We tried room service again, received a modified order (I got the pasta but with a different sauce), the food was terrible, hardly edible, cold.
Annoying music continued and it was so loud it was impossible to sleep, with earplugs, windows shut and blinds lowered. Around 2 am it finally stopped, however only to resume, and much louder again at 9 am as "The chlidrens carnival" started. It became apparent that the street past the hotel is closed (and we would be unable to leave by car) and at reception they only informed us the street would reopen at 2 pm and that we were informed of this inconvenience the night before with a special note in the room. Only then I recovered the said note which was under the hotel directory and truly notified of the road closure in Croatian, however the dates were wrong, a week off (and not even the same) in the notes in English and German.
By then we were aching to leave, it was impossible to stay in the room (noise, we could hardly talk), we were tired,... Instead of a peaceful relaxation weekend we got to be stressed out of our minds, deprived of sleep, served bad food,...
I've seen many baby strollers in the hotel and I cannot imagine how those families were coping with the noise.
The checkout process was incredibly slow.
Our main grudge and the reason why we are never coming back is that they failed to inform us on booking (made directly to the hotel via phone) that there is some kind of a carnival going on (and apparently it is so for three consecutive weekends in late January and early February). It is not a worldwide famous event of which all prospective tourists should already be aware of, nor have they any information on the subject on their website.

This was our first trip to Croatia and Opatija was the first stop. What a beautiful hotel. right on the water. We were impressed with both the hotel and Opatija. Our room on the fifth floor had a splendid view of the water and the seafront promenade. The staff were friendly and helpul. After a long drive we wanted a quick dinner. The front desk recommended Rouzmarin which served an excellent pizza. We will return.
