The room looking out over the historic "Egg" (a historic fortress) was well-appointed and had a very nice view. There are a number of restaurants near the Egg and the hotel restaurant was very good, if expensive. There is a four lane road in front of the hotel which can be noisy, but it was not troublesome. Staff was quite helpful though I detected a touch of negative attitude towards the two of us by some staff (we are a mixed-race gay couple), but it was not oppressive. The hotel is fairly convenient to the ferries and marina and close to the Palazzo Reale and Piazzadel Plebiscito. It is a longer walk to the Spanish Quarter or to the Funicular to take you up to the Castel Sant' Elmo and Certose di S. Martino. You will want to take a taxi to most other sites of interest.

Recently overnighted at the Grand Vesuvio before driving to the Amalfi Coast. Our room had a stunning front view of Castel dell'Ovo, yet the hotel was whisper quiet with the electric storm shutters lowered. We arrived exhausted and were recommended a great restaurant across the street by the Castel. Likewise, the hotel breakast the next morning was great, efficient, and well-presented. We dealt mostly with Maurizio, and he was knowledgeable, gracious, and just superb in every way. We left on a rainy morning and the hotel made everything so easy and arranged a cab driver who was genteel and honest....which isn't a given with Naples cabbies. We have stayed at many 5 star properties in Italy and Europe and the service at Grand Vesuvio fits handily into the top tier. I'm not sure what other reviewers found lacking in service because we travel with very high expectations and they absolutely were met at the Grand Vesuvio.
Good Hotel, Great Location... Excelsior might be better

Stayed at the Vesuvio for one nigth after returning from Capri.
The hotell is well located and the room was spacious with sea view. However, the furniture felt old and I was disappointed by the decor of the room.
The bathroom was very nice and had been renovated just recently. Access to the swimming pool is complicated and the swimming pool is rather small.
Through I haven't been to the Excelsior, I believe it offers better value and overall better service.

Truly one of the worst experiences of my life for so much money! The source of the problems were mainly from the very rude and unprofessional staff. Mostly, they sat around gossiping and looking each guest up and down, especially in the front desk. When we asked for directions or taxis, there was always a curt reply that followed, and sometimes, the taxi wasn't even called for us and we had to go hail it ourselves. The only time they became attentive was when we asked for the guest comment form. What a difference that made, but unfortunately, we had already checked out by then.
The worst were the ones sitting in the office right behind the front desk, as if they thought that no one could see them when the door was wide open. The breakfast was appallingly bad as well, with barely any fresh fruit and none that looked appealing.
In the end, it was definitely the staff (as in most luxury hotels) that made the difference, and in this case, for the worse. I would highly recommend going next door to the Excelsior (which was under renovation when we were there).
