location is great but easter weekend meant there was kermis (carnival, fair) on the grote markt which is normally a guarantee for noise but the disturbance was negligible. room was old, but okayish.the shower did indeed cause a minor flood, and the room could do with some airing out but it was alright. if we had paid the asking price i would be more critical, but 88 euro for a double on easter weekend is not bad.
sauna facilities are bare minimum and lack a cold shower.....very necessary in a sauna thats been heated to 110 celsius....
the hotel certainly has its own style, including a character receptionist.

We can higly recommend the Hotel Damier as we did really enjoyed our stay at this historic property. Altough it seems to be the oldest hotel of Belgium it's really trendy with lots of contemporary art & lovely lounge music. Nice breakfast buffet served in a superb venue. The beautiful bar isn't cheap but offers a great whisky & cigar collection. We stayed at room 117, a nice large room with a view...

Hotel in a good position on the market square and the public rooms are very nice.
We stayed in double room 14 which was tiny with scarcely room to walk round the bed. There was no tea and coffee making facilities, which is a must in a 4* hotel, no chest of drawers to put your smalls and only five coathangers in the wardrobe for two people. The contol for the air conditioner was broken and the television which had only four channels took an age to programme, after which it flicked between channels at will, presumably as guests in other rooms used their remote control.
The air conditioning out -let for reception was directly below the window and was very noisy until about half past twelve am, ok for us because we didn't spend much time in the hotel but not good for "early to beds"
The room was very hot with hot water pipes running under the floor so even if you turned off the radiators the room was still far too hot as you couldn't open the windows because of the noise from air conditioning outlet.
There was no mini bar, and the bottle of mineral water, free in every other hotel I have stayed in was priced at 4.5 euro. Who on earth do they expect to pay over £3.00 for a bottle of warm water!
The hotel bar is very expensive and does not have the promised entertainment so it's worth going to one of the other bars or restaurants in the square rather than staying in the hotel all evening .
On the first night there was a private function in the hotel which closed the restaurant to ordinary guests who were also not able to use the lounge or bar until late into the evening. This did mean , however, that there was a much better breakfast the following morning because some of the guests from the function had stayed overnight.
The breakfast on the second day was adiquate but there was not the selection of cold meat and cheese as on the the day before, the smolked salmon had definately disappeared.
All in all an adiquate small hotel in a good position but definately not of the standard they advertise or worth the 150 euros per night or the 4* rating quoted on their web site.

I stayed in this hotel twice because of business travels. The hotel rooms have been ok - even if the bathroom is a bit small. The hotel is known for its "boutique style" but I would suggest not to have too high expectations.
The breakfast is ok, but not above average.
The location is great, it is in the center of the town, facing the town square.
There are flat-screen TVs in the rooms, but they have a special hotel software which is very inconvient. Switching to normal TV (without costs) takes minutes because you have first to click through all menues regarding pay-TV... Sometimes when you are watching a TV show the screen automatically starts over again and you have to click through all menues again...
The staff is friendly.

The Grand Damier is a hotel with the romance of times gone by, but simultaneously it provides all the modern luxuries that one wants. I fell in love with the hotel as soon as I walked in: with it's lobby reflecting a mixture of past elegance and modern art (as they participate in the Artists in Residence programme).
The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are huge. It's a quite a deal for 120 Euros/ night for a deluxe room, and is located in the centre of Kortrijk, right near the historic square. There are many nice restaurants around.
The rooms reflect a glorious past, with matching wall-paper and curtains, quilts bearing the monogram of the hotel. The rooms are air-conditioned and well-maintained.
The breakfast buffet is not big but is sufficient, and the room where they serve breakfast is cheery and bright, and a charming place to sit and sip a cup of tea.
There are many English channels (on their LCD TVs) and one can finally enjoy choosing between channels of various English shows-Discovery, MTV, etc., that too in Europe (albeit with Dutch sub-titles).
Internet is free if you use their computer in the lobby, but for Wi-fi in the room, one must pay 2.5 Euros per hour, or 12 Euros per day, which is quite a fair price.
They even have a list of all the famous people who have lived here, including celebrities like Sheryl Crow, President George Bush (senior, I think), and many more.
All in all, this hotel was a great experience.
