This is a lovely old hotel with an exterior that could be improved upon to match the old-world interiors. It's in a nice location with great views. Our room overlooked a meadow with lambs grazing, with lots of mountains in the background. Lovely, and the room was fairly big. The bathroom was not bad, but could do with some upgradation and better plumbing.
Breakfast (which is basic but tasty) overlooking the mountains is heavenly if the weather is right. A nice small pool and a great sauna which we loved using every night. Nothing to complain about on the service front - perfectly helpful staff, though I had to pay for room slippers and toothpaste, which is not really expected in a fairly expensive place like this!
The only problem is that this hotel is a 30+ minute walk into town, and there's really nothing near the hotel. There is a bus stop close by but buses are quite infrequent., so unless you have a car or are willing to pay 10 Euros each way for a cab, you will have to make the long trek.
The city is where you would want to be in when you are not admiring the views - the restaurants (try Spago) and shops are wonderful and can take days to explore.
Next time, I would stay closer to the city where there seemed to be a lot of good options in the same price or cheaper.

i had the misfortune of staying at your hotel with my wife. you will find we had stayed there in your records november13-14, under mr and mrs. lambert. i thought your hotel staff was the rudess and most arrogant people, that i have ever met. i will not personally single out any one staff member, that is not my point. they tried to charge us for 2 nights and somebodyelses bar bill, when we only stayed one night and we had no bar bill. my family is originally from stuttgart, so i'm very lucky i could speak german, and it prevented me from getting ripped off. everytime i tried to ask the staff a question as in , what is on the breakfast buffet in the morning?, i was treated rudely. me and my wife spent $3,000 to travel from louisiana to germany. we spent time in frankfurt, munchen, garsmiisch, and innsbruck. if that how american tourist are treated, then i will go elsewhere. my travel agent reccomended your hotel to us to travel from our home in new orleans, louisiana. when i got back, i told my travel agent to never reccomend your hotel to anyone in louisiana again. since, my experience in garmisch was so bad at your hotel, and i'm still upset over your hotel and your rude staff for 5 years. i have no plans to return or visit germany ever again, that's how bad it was, and that says a lot. i have talked many americans from visiting germany, just speaking of the terrible experiences at your hotel.i'm very surprised this hotel is still in business, and i'm not joking, i'm dead serious.

Abbiamo trascorso 5 notti in questo hotel, da cui siamo partiti per varie escursioni di un giorno. I dintorni erano stupendi.
Very enjoyable short stay

We last stayed at the Sonnenbichl 15 years ago and had fond memories of it. I was a little concerned at some of the negative points in previous reviews but we decided to give it a try anyway.
We were not disappointed. We had booked quite late and requested a high/quiet/alp view room. The room offered was at the back which have no balcony and a not very good view, but reception desk re-allocated us to a room at the front.
This was an extremely nice mini suite with a mountain view.
You really need to be on the front of the hotel to appreciate the view as this is a big feature, but be warned. At the front there is quite a lot of traffic noise starting pretty early in the morning. The noise would be my only reason for not giving the Sonnenbichl a five star rating and it will certainly not stop us returning. The restaraunt, stube and bar are all excellent but quiet except at the weekends. The staff are also very pleasant and helpful.
To sum up the Sonnenbichl is a perfect place to stay for a few days whilst exploring the local area.

We stayed 5 nights at this hotel and took day trips from the location. Great surroundings waking after arriving at night to a great view of the mountains.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great.
Only downside was an uncomfortable platform bed. Otherwise the room was comfortable and a good size.
