My husband and I travel frequently to Guadalajara on working trips and have always stayed at the Fiesta Americana as that was our recommendation from a friend who lives nearby. We've always been let down by that hotel for it's general lack of character. For example it's always bothered me that you cannot control the room's temperature or open the windows. This time we wanted a more personal, boutique style experience and our friend found Villa Ganz for us. From the moment we stepped into the door we were graciously welcomed to the hotel and offered a drink. From the lobby you could view the beautiful back garden. Upon entering our room we were so happy to find a large terrace that looks onto the garden. The tall ceilings, assortment of candles and small lights all created a wonderful ambiance. The bedding was superior, the bathroom was very clean and the bathtub was large. The water pressure was good and the staff was perfectly attentive yet respectful of our privacy. What a wonderful find - beautifully decorated and on a street with a good bookstore and a delicious Mexican bakery. Highly recommended even at the risk of us not getting a room when we come again...

I can certainly echo those praising the Villa Ganz’s old world charm, relaxing ambience, antique-filled rooms, fresh flowers, and lovely gardens but I disagree with criticism of the location. The Minerva/Chapultepec neighborhood is easy walking distance to numerous restaurants, shops and sights, including the Expiatory Temple and amazing Orozco murals at the University. Indeed, we chose the Villa because it’s away from the bustle of downtown.
What really gives this boutique a hotel an edge is owner Sally Rangel. A total professional, Ms. Rangel is as savvy as she is personable and attractive and truly understands the meaning of “attention to detail.” (Indeed, how many hotel owners are on site every day?) Ms. Rangel and her able staff, in particular Armando and Bernie, anticipated our every need and politely answered questions they surely heard every day. We never passed the front desk without being asked if we wanted a bottle of water or a taxi and upon return were offered a complimentary glass of wine. The staff was frank in their response to queries about restaurants, telling us where to go and, more importantly, what places to avoid.
Our weekend package included a dinner prepared by the Villa’s chef who worked closely with us in planning the menu and prepared exactly what we requested with style and beautiful presentation. Served in the Villa’s subtropical garden, it was one of our best meals in Guadalajara. That’s saying a lot in a city with an abundance of excellent eateries. Our package also promised an evening at the Ballet Folklorico, and when the performance was cancelled Ms. Rangel countered with a bottle of fine French champagne one night and a bottle of excellent tequila another. In fact, there seemed to be a surprise every evening with turn-down service, and the kitchen happily prepared sandwiches for our flight home. Last but not least, when American Airlines caused us to miss our flight to Guadalajara and our first night at the Villa, Ms. Rangel generously comped the suite for that evening. When you factor in the reasonable rates, the Villa Ganz experience is almost impossible to beat.
