The Melia Hotel chain must send their employees to the school of "NO," no matter how small your request. The desk staff in their hotels I've visited always have a very "snotty" attitude.
I'll never make the same mistake again.
I forgot that the Melia Hotel in Cancun sent me to their "sister" hotel ("sister" hotel normally equates to a -3 star accommodations when you are paying for a 4+ star accommodations).
Don't be fooled by dramatic or elegant lobbies, the rooms "suck."
I had paid extra (through a travel agent, not Orbiz or Expedia) for a lake view deluxe room and instead received a rank small parking lot view room. Not pretty! I literally had to call my travel agent and wait in the lobby for 1 1/2 hours until I was redirected to a first floor room over looking the parking lot to see a "hint of blue" over the cars.
Now, the restaurant and its sweet kind staff is very good (almost excellent).
The only hotels that I think are worse than the Melia in Latin America are the Liberadores in Peru. I'd rather be checked into a hospital.

We loved the poetry written on the walls! Unlike the previous reviewer, we really liked the decor--wide hallways, big public rooms with internet and cosy little corners. Reading Pablo Neruda on the walls was a plus. The breakfast was the best of our three week trip. I agree that the front desk and the service in the bar needs lots of improvement. We walked down the hill to Govinda and had a great dinner.

Beginning with the fur covered bed in the entranceway, we knew this was going to be an odd experience. The hotel decor is very strange and, frankly, trying too hard from a design perspective. There are beds in the bar as well as the lobby, skins on chair backs and strange common rooms with no obvious purpose. Although the weather was very cool, none of the fireplaces were lit during our stay. The service at the reception desk was unforgiveable. After a curt check-in, we arrived at our assigned non-smoking room to find that it reeked of smoke. When we returned to the desk to request a new assignment, the man on duty rolled his eyes, sighed and told us he had nothing else. When we asked for the general manager, he stomped off to a back room and eventually returned with another room for us. The new room was an upgrade, which we were grateful for, as the orginal standard room was almost too small to turn around in. Dinner was the highlight. I ordered the king crab appetizer and was thrilled with it. It came cool, out of the shell and was served with several different olive oils for dipping. That's it, just plain, pure crab meat. It was the sweetest, most delicious thing I have ever eaten. It was fresh, from the straight of Magellan and totally different from the salty, soggy king crab served in the shell in US restaurants. The serving was huge, almost a pound. The rest of the food ordered by my tablemates was fantastic as well. We watched in awe as our friends were served "ice cream made before your very eyes". Just order it. It is quite memorable. In sumary, rooms and front desk service were low points. Dinner was the high point. Hotel design did not score any points.
