We stayed here for a total of 7 nights during a two-week vacation in December 2007. The hotel is an easy walk to the Royal Palace, Plaza del Sol, and other major sights -- and there are two nearby metro stations for longer outings. Rooms were modern, clean, and well-maintained. Although only part of the desk staff spoke English, all were friendly and efficient. Our rate included a very acceptable buffet-style breakfast, which (unlike many other Spanish hotels) is served in a nice dining room with a street view instead of being hidden in the basement.

We stayed at this hotel for a week in one of the premier rooms. On the third night, a very odd thing happened. When we tried to enter our room, we found that our keys would not work. The person at the desk explained that it was hotel policy to lock out any "guests" whose total bill had run up to over 400 (or perhaps 450, she wasn't sure) Euros. If we wished to pay the outstanding amount, she said, then we could regain access to our room.
Well, of course we "wished" to pay the outstanding amount, and we weren't bothered again this way for the duration of our stay. But we have never met up with a hotel management that treated its "guests" this way before, and I hope that we never do again. While the facility itself was adequate and some of the staff were pleasant, the overall atmosphere, which seems to radiate down from the top management, was much more suspicion towards intruders than hospitality towards guests. There was no bellman to help us up the stairs with our suitcases when we arrived, but the hangers in the closets are theft-proof.
We booked the premier room so that we could have a bed that we could actually sleep on, without destroying our backs on the usual rock-hard European hotel bed. I will give the Tryp Menfis this much credit--they did deliver the decent bed that their web site promised. And the hotel was exeptionally clean.

We stayed for 5 days in September. Our room was clean and everything in it worked. Our room was in the back of the hotel and while we would have liked to have a view of the Gran Via, where we were was nice and quiet. We were able to sleep with the windows open on 2 of the cooler nights. The buffet breakfast was very good. It is a good location for a first visit to Madrid. I’m not sure we would stay there again, only because I am now more familiar with the city.
